I chose to focus on the first tab stop in the sidebar after it opens because this behavior mimics the <dialog> element.

When I follow your testing instructions, then after opening the sidebar I press TAB a few times to go through the Site Navigation entries, something very weird happens: up and down arrows have no effect when focus is on the first few items (well, not no effect: the page scrolls in the background a bit), but once I focus on "API" or any of the links below it, pressing the up arrow does this:
Those are exactly the entries that are collapsed under the "more" menu in the non-sidebar version of the nav. Seems like maybe a CSS breakpoint is missing? |

I finally managed to review this PR @gabalafou and all seems reasonable.
The keyboard navigation also seems to work as it should so will go ahead and approve this and this is ready to merge on my end unless someone else spots anything blocking (will wait a day or so before merging).
The CI fails are related to the regression checkpoints, but we already agreed to fix these directly in feature-focus before merging to main

Ah seems this refers to the label overlay in src/pydata_sphinx_theme/assets/styles/sections/_sidebar-toggle.scss and src/pydata_sphinx_theme/theme/pydata_sphinx_theme/layout.html so nvm

IMPORTANT: this PR is against
feature-focusbranch notmain. Style fixes related to interaction state (focus, hover, current) will be collected in small increments intofeature-focusbefore being merged intomain.Rather than completely refactor the mobile sidebar implementation, I decided to tweak it as little as possible. Here's what I did:
Test plan
Go to home page, i.e. a page with only one sidebar and one button to open it.
Reduce the width of the browser until the button appears in the nav bar, then:
Now go to a page that has both sidebar toggles in the nav bar and repeat the same test steps.
