The documentation for the old instrument and how to set it up is here

Many years ago, I had gone to seen Vernon Reid play live. (twice?) Being a programmer, I was intrigued by the guy that appeared to be playing what looked to me to be a painted up Microsoft Natural keyboard. There was so much going on onstage that I didn’t know if he was driving noise makers, generating MIDI, or something entirely different. I was learning OpenGL at the time, and had done my first Win32 OpenGL code. I had no idea what he was really doing, but I was inspired by the idea that you could use a computer as a serious performance instrument, ended up learning enough about MIDI to program my own keyboard based instruments.
Google about Leon Gruenbaum and Samchillian to learn about the instrument, as it is covered in depth there.
Xstrument is based on the Samchillian, with minor differences in keyboard layout and the addition of visuals.
