Build instructions:
xbee-comm$ autoreconf -vi .
xbee-comm$ ./configure
xbee-comm$ make

In order to access the xbee as a regular user, you could do the following:
# setfacl -m u:$USERNAME:rw /dev/ttyUSB0

On MacOSX, please use /dev/cu.usb* instead of /dev/tty.usb* to access the
serial device where your XBee is plugged into.

Firmware files can be downloaded from digi:
  http://www.digi.com/support/productdetail?pid=3430&type=firmware
  ftp://ftp1.digi.com/support/firmware/

If you had a Series 2 XBee, you could do something like the following:
$ wget http://ftp1.digi.com/support/firmware/82001817_F.zip
$ unzip 82001817_F.zip
$ xbfwup [args...] ebl_files/XB24-ZB_21A0.ebl
