Make the coffee timer a background process independent of app "openness" #147

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
I sometimes find myself accidentally closing the app while waiting for my coffee to brew. When I reopen the app my coffee timer is completely reset and even though I can skip steps I cannot fast forward the timers in any way so it's difficult to pick up where I left off.

Describe the solution you'd like

  • Much like how the native Android timer app continues to count down despite the app being closed, or certain music players can continue to play music in the background, I'm curious if it's possible to implement the coffee timer as this type of a "background process" as well.
  • If it's difficult/impossible to implement this type of feature, adding the ability to manually click on the timer indicator circle to "fast forward" the clock would be a nice alternative as well. To avoid frustration from accidental misclicks a little "timer adjustment lock" which you need to click and hold could be implemented. This lock would first need to be unlocked before you can manually fast forward the timer.

Describe alternatives you've considered
In theory a temporary workaround to my issue is to temporarily edit the recipe to have a shorter timer but I feel this workaround is a bit tedious for a one time fix.

Hi @deltainium
Couple of things:

  • I agree that it should work that way, but I haven't been motivated to do the necessary work, because it seems hard and current workflow works for me 😅
  • Cofi should go to picture in picture if you "go home" while the recipe is running. Sadly I cannot do that on app switch.
  • you can "fast-forward" a recipe by pressing on a step you want to skip to.

Hope that somewhat helps you work around the issue in the future.

It's a duplicate of #64 so I'm going to reference it in there and change #64 name's to something more general

@deltainium Don't know if that's still relevant to you, but it has been fixed by #201 🎉
Next release will include a notification that will continue the timer when the app goes into the background

@rozPierog That is genuinely really great to hear, for me this is a massive feature. Thank you a million for your efforts Leon! I can only imagine how much of a pain it was to implement. Looking forward to the next update on F-Droid! 🥳🎉
