when lambda is triggered, read s3 event details, create new instances, add to autoscaling group and create timer for another lambda to shut down previously running two instances

this does not work correctly. I have opened a new support request with AWS to find out why my lambda function does not work. The work around is to do this via maven.

this is not needed for now. lambda was probably not working because of ip addressing issues. IP addressing is now fixed, so, possibly lamda should work. I am closing this one. There is one ticket open for continued investigation on lambda (see #19) and I will open another one to re-design using lamda.
