Methodology

Graph data structure

The MRT network is represented as an undirected weighted graph using scalax.collection.Graph.

• Nodes are train platforms
• Edges mean that platforms are either connected by train service, or interchange transfer (walking)
• Edge weight is the travelling time in minutes
• Shortest path computed with Dijkstra's algorithm (Library implementation)

Travel time

Time taken to travel from one platform to another

• Starts when boarding at the origin platform
• Ends when alighting at the destination platform
• Includes interchange transfers: walking, waiting for the next train
  • Transfer times are unofficial estimates, and configurable

Centrality

Closeness centrality is the sum of the lengths of the shortest paths between one platform and all other platforms.

• Since edge weight is in minutes, likewise for centrality
• Platforms are ranked by the centrality score (lower is better)
