Athelas 1.7.6

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept.

Fixed

  • European, Japanese and other copies of the Xbox games (#36): the game's page no longer refuses them. It
warns that the version is untested and unsupported (a European or Japanese copy is expected not to start yet: the
games are built from the US discs' code). Two buttons, It worked and It didn't work, open a GitHub page
with the copy's details to send us. A version built from the other regions' discs is planned.
  • The Return of the King (PC): PlayStation buttons as white discs in the combo list and the upgrade shop (#34):
the check for button pictures in a line of text never fired; it now compares against where the font's letters end
    (thanks to brig-dev's analysis).
  • Vulkan: textures dropping out in The Third Age (it ran out of room for the game's ~13,600 draws a frame and skipped
    the rest).
  • The Return of the King (Xbox): black bars flashing at the sides on ultrawide screens (#38) in Southern
Gate and the Minas Tirith Courtyard: a full-screen effect in those levels was taken for a menu picture.
  • The Third Age: a short stutter every few seconds with Sharper text on (#37): when the game changed a few
words, the whole page of text was redrawn (about 40 ms); now only the part that changed is.
  • The Third Age: characters bursting into spikes with widescreen on (#37), in cutscenes and sometimes in play.

New

  • The Third Age on ultrawide screens (#35): the game fills the whole width (3440x1440 and wider); the text and
the HUD stay 16:9 in the middle, as in the other three games.
  • Ultrawide menus (#35): the menus of The Two Towers, The Return of the King and The Third Age widen with the
screen up to 21:9 (black beyond that, on 32:9), instead of staying 16:9; play and in-game cutscenes fill the
    whole width.
  • Movies never wider than 21:9: on a 32:9 screen the intro and story films get bars at the sides instead of
being zoomed (The Third Age's lost their top and bottom) or stretched.
  • The Third Age: Button pictures (Graphics): PlayStation, Nintendo or keyboard keys in place of the Xbox buttons,
as in the other three games. For now the A button; more to come.

Athelas 1.7.5

@Shagg88 Shagg88 released this 31 Oct 06:30

Athelas 1.7.5

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept.

  • Working on an AI - ESRGAN 4x Upscaled Texture Pack

Fixed

  • "Athelas couldn't read this copy of the game. Is it the US release?" The Xbox games no longer build
themselves on your PC: they come ready to play again, as before 1.7.3. Nothing to wait for the first time you
press Play. (In 1.7.4 the build stopped for many players, The Return of the King in particular; your copy of the
game was fine.) The build files 1.7.4 left in your Athelas folder (the kits and tools folders, and a
build folder in each Xbox game's folder, several hundred MB) are removed the first time the new launcher starts.

New

  • Other releases of the games can be played: a European, Japanese or other copy (or another US revision) is no
longer refused. The game's page says it's an untested version that may work but may have problems. If it plays
well, press This version works: Athelas stops asking for that copy, and a GitHub page opens with its details,
so you can tell us and we can add it as known to work.

  • Sharper button pictures: the PlayStation and Nintendo buttons in The Two Towers and The Return of the King are
drawn at 4x the game's size.

  • AMD FSR frame generation (experimental): Graphics, Frame generation, with the AMD FSR upscaler. Shows a
made-up frame between each two the game draws, so 3D scenes move more smoothly, on any graphics card. The HUD
can smear a little while the camera moves for now. Takes effect at the next start.

  • FSR updated to AMD's FSR SDK 2.4.

  • Settings labels: SMAA is marked recommended; AMD FSR, NVIDIA DLSS and frame generation are marked
experimental (FSR can shimmer in The Third Age); Vulkan is marked experimental in The Third Age.

Athelas 1.7.4

@Shagg88 Shagg88 released this 30 Oct 17:56

Athelas 1.7.4

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept. Each Xbox game builds itself again the first time you press Play (about 30 seconds).

New in the launcher

  • The Third Age's menu music plays when its box is in front, read from your own copy of the game, and it is in
the Minstrel on the Journey page.
  • New backgrounds: every game's page and box now rotate The Two Towers' gallery (film stills and concept art)
and The Fellowship of the Ring's loading-screen sketches, from whichever of the two you have. The Xbox Return of the
King only has four small menu pictures, which looked blurry on a large screen.
  • The Third Age saves a still of each film you watch (in TA-Xbox\art), for its backgrounds later on.

Fixed

  • The Return of the King (PC): button pictures still white in the combo list and the upgrade shop (#34). Those
screens draw text at double brightness, which washed the pictures out; they now keep their colours.
  • The Return of the King (PC): the special ability in Options (#34) shows the controller's two buttons, like the
rest of the controller column, instead of "Buttons 7 + 8".
  • The Third Age: stutter in screens that rewrite their text every frame (the sharper text redrew it each time);
and a possible crash when closing the game.
  • Settings: the Vulkan renderer's description now says plainly that it is untested and has no anti-aliasing,
    HDR or upscalers yet.

Coming soon

  • The Third Age in other languages: translation subtitles in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese,
Polish, Dutch, Swedish and Russian, as the other three Xbox games have them.

Athelas 1.7.3

@Shagg88 Shagg88 released this 30 Oct 12:05

Athelas 1.7.3: The Third Age arrives

⚔️ New game: The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

The Third Age joins Athelas as the fourth game: the 2004 Xbox RPG, recompiled to run natively on your PC, and built on your PC like the other three.

  • Achievements for each of its nine areas, from Eregion to the Pelennor Fields, plus the kill deeds and Fate's
    deeds every game shares.
  • On the Journey page: its areas on the map (with Eregion), level records, quests and Virtues.
  • Widescreen, unlocked frame rate, field of view, draw distance, sharper 4x text (the title too), smooth leaf
edges, the HUD at the screen edges, movie zoom, and gameplay and cheat options as in the other games.
  • Drawing on a second core (on by default): a large jump in frame rate. Turn it off in the Graphics tab if
characters ever show a ghost image.

⚠️ This update installs differently from every release before it

Until now, each game came as a ready-made program inside the download. From 1.7.3 on, Athelas builds each
game's program on your own PC, from your own copy of the game.
No game code is in the download any more,
only a build kit for each game and the tools to use it.

What happens when you update:

  1. Press Update in the launcher (or unzip the new release over your Athelas folder). Your settings,
saves, achievements and Journey progress are kept
: none of them are in the download, so nothing touches
    them.
  2. Open a game's page. Athelas sees that game needs building and starts on its own: a progress bar shows
"Building ... for your PC" and how long is left.
  3. Wait for "... is ready to play." This takes under a minute per game on most PCs (longer on older
    ones), once
. After that the game starts as fast as before. Each game builds the first time you open its
page; you don't have to build all four.
  4. Play.

If something goes wrong:

  • Your antivirus blocks or deletes the new program: Athelas has just made a new program on your PC, which
some antivirus software is wary of. Allow your Athelas folder in your antivirus, then press Try again.
  • The build stops with a message: press Try again. If it fails again, press Play the previous version
    for now
: the program you were playing before is kept until the new one builds, so you can keep playing.
Athelas tries the update again the next time it starts. Then please open an issue on GitHub with the
build log (the Show the log button) so we can fix it.
  • It seems stuck: the first build of a game is the slow part, and on an older PC it can take longer. The
time left is shown under the progress bar.
  • The download is larger than before: it carries the build tools. It's a one-time cost.
  • Left over from earlier versions: once a game has built, Athelas removes the files the old version left
beside it that nothing uses any more. Nothing of yours is touched.

The Return of the King (PC) is not affected: ROTK Fix works as it always has.

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept.

New: SMAA (all four Xbox games)

  • SMAA (Graphics tab, off by default): smooths jagged edges after the picture is drawn, including leaves
and grass that anti-aliasing misses. Works with anti-aliasing on or off and costs very little.

New: the Journey

A new page from the front screen (the Journey button, or J), in the spirit of The Lord of the Rings
Online. Everything on it that changes how a game plays is off by default.

  • Deeds and titles: every game's deeds in one place, with progress bars. All four Xbox games now count the
enemies you defeat (deeds at 100, 250, 500, 1,000 and 5,000). Any deed you've earned can be your title, shown
under Athelas on the front screen.
  • Quests: three a day and two a week ("Defeat 60 enemies at Helm's Deep"), with titles for 10, 25 and 50
    completed.
  • Map: the road of the games across Middle-earth, on a parchment of our own with The Two Towers' own
map of Rohan and the Misty Mountains drawn in from your copy. Places light up as you complete their levels, and
the road you've walked is marked in red.
  • Records: each level you complete, with how long it took and how many enemies you defeated, and your bests.
  • Virtues (opt-in): five virtues ranked by your deeds, three slotted for their full bonus, as in LOTRO. They
make your hits a little stronger or the damage you take a little lighter (at most 30%), in every game.
  • Fate (opt-in): a harder road: enemies hit 50% harder and take 25% more to bring down, every enemy counts
twice towards the kill deeds, and two deeds of its own.
  • Fellowship (opt-in): in The Return of the King's co-op, while both players are fighting, both hit 10%
    harder.
  • Lore: a short page for each level, opened by completing it.
  • Minstrel: play The Fellowship of the Ring's music by name, and The Two Towers' menu theme, from your copies.

New: graphics

  • Recommended for this PC (Graphics tab): looks at your graphics card, its memory, your screen and
processor, and picks a preset and frame rate. Undo puts your own settings back.
  • DLSS and FSR: the HUD, subtitles and menus stay sharp and no longer smear or ghost when upscaling.

Fixed

  • The Third Age: the picture no longer changes shape for a few seconds after a movie; leaves, branches and
fences are no longer blocky, and no longer have a ghostly shadow around them with anti-aliasing on.

  • Renderers: steadier start-up and plain error messages when the graphics driver stops responding; the
game no longer picks a software adapter over your graphics card; minimising and resizing are handled.

  • The Return of the King (PC): when the Vulkan renderer can't start, it now falls back to Direct3D 8 at
    the right resolution.

Athelas 1.7.2

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept.

Fixed

  • The Two Towers: HUD pieces coming apart on wide screens (#33). With "HUD at the screen edges" on, part of
the health bar or the special meter could be left behind towards the middle of the screen, most often once
you had lost some health. The pieces now stay together at the edge.
  • The Return of the King (PC): button pictures shown as plain white shapes (#34) in the pause menu's combo
list, the in-game hints and the upgrade shop. They now show in colour, as in the Options screen.
  • The Return of the King (PC): the special ability's buttons (#34) now show the real buttons with a
controller in the shop and the Options screen, instead of "Button 7" / "Button 8" / "Buttons 7+8".
  • The Return of the King (PC): Vulkan check - the Vulkan renderer needs a Vulkan 1.4 graphics driver. A PC
with an older (Vulkan 1.3) driver used to get a black screen; it now falls back to Direct3D 8 and runs.
  • Linux / Steam Deck (Proton): the settings Athelas makes for ROTK Fix are now checked and written to
ROTKFix\wine-overrides.txt for reports, and Remove ROTK Fix puts back any settings you had before.

Fixed

  • The Fellowship of the Ring: sounds going quiet (#30). After breaking enough things (for example in Bag End),
new sound effects stopped playing. The game's sound clock was stuck, so finished sounds were never let go and the
game ran out of sound voices. Sounds now keep playing however much you smash.

@Shagg88 Shagg88 released this 28 Oct 18:26

Athelas 1.7.0

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept. This release is about the launcher: it can now do what my other launcher, COGBox, does.

New in the launcher

  • Athelas in 11 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Polish, Russian,
Japanese, Chinese (Simplified) and Korean. It asks on first start; change it under This window on any game's
About tab. The Xbox ports' settings are translated too. The translations are in the lang folder, and
    corrections are welcome.
  • Back up and restore your saves on each game's About tab. A backup is a zip on your desktop. Restoring one first
zips the saves you have now ("before restore"), so nothing is lost.
  • A log folder for every play (Open logs): the log, how the game closed and what that means, and any crash report.
    The newest 15 are kept.
  • Clear shaders for the Xbox ports, if a game ever looks wrong after a driver update. The saved shaders are set
    aside, not deleted.
  • Play time for The Return of the King (PC) too. Athelas now waits in the background while it plays, and it says
    so if the game crashes.
  • Desktop shortcuts for each game: they open Athelas and start that game with its settings.
  • The window grows with you: resize or maximise it and everything scales. F11, or LT + RT together, switches
fullscreen from any screen. A borderless option hides the title bar. On a Steam Deck-sized screen it starts
    maximised and borderless.
  • Controller on the carousel, as in COGBox: LB / RB light Play or Settings, A presses the lit one. The hints at
the bottom now show the fullscreen shortcut too.
  • The Shire theme plays on The Fellowship of the Ring's box, from your own copy of the game.
  • Mods from a .zip (The Return of the King, PC): "Add a mod (.zip)" on the Mods tab. Data mods each get their own
folder, with a tick, Up / Down to set which one wins when two change the same file, and Remove. A mod that is a
program (a .dll) is only added after a warning.

Fixes

  • The Two Towers' menu music didn't play when a European copy was added before the US one. A box now plays (and
takes its music from) the US copy first.
  • ROTK Fix's log now says when a code mod has no ModInit (it was reported as started).

The three Xbox ports are the same as in 1.6.1.

@Shagg88 Shagg88 released this 26 Oct 18:37

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept. Everything in 1.6.0 is in this release too.

Fixes

  • The Return of the King (PC) closed straight after starting on a PC with no Vulkan driver
(#27), such as a virtual machine. Without Vulkan, the Vulkan renderer (DXVK) ended the game
instead of letting ROTK Fix fall back. ROTK Fix now checks for a Vulkan graphics device before it loads DXVK and
uses Windows' own Direct3D 8 without one, with the reason in ROTKFix.log. This also works when rotk.exe is
    started directly.
  • The launcher no longer resets Renderer = native in ROTKFix.ini to dxvk when it loads the PC game's
settings, so a renderer set by hand is kept.
  • Valar Boons: the first boon was on from the start, with no time limit (a setting left over from testing). Every
boon now starts off and lasts its own duration when you call it.
  • "Last played" after a game that didn't start: a game that couldn't start no longer shows as played, and
The Return of the King (PC) is marked played only once it has actually started.

Fixes in all three Xbox ports

From an independent review of the code, each finding checked against the games before it was changed:

  • A rare wrong result in a math instruction (PMADDWD) that The Return of the King and The Fellowship of the
Ring use: for one combination of values the recompiled code's result was undefined.
  • Copies between two rendered pictures kept at different scales read the source at the wrong scale; they are now
drawn across at the right size.
  • Safer handling of unusual requests from the game: memory released past its block is refused, a damaged game file
is turned down with a message instead of being read past its end, a folder listing no longer skips a file when the
game's buffer is small, the file position is updated safely when two threads share a file, a cancelled background
task no longer runs, an oversized drawing call is skipped and logged, and nan in settings.toml is ignored.

Thanks to dqunbp for the detailed report on #27, and to the reviewer who went through the code.

Athelas 1.6.0

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept.

A new Athelas: your games on a carousel

  • Athelas opens on your games as boxes on a carousel. The one in front is large; the others stand smaller and
turned away at the sides. Turn it with the arrow keys, the D-pad or stick, the mouse wheel, or a click on a box.
Behind it, art from the game in front (from your own copy of the game), changing as you turn. Play starts it,
Settings zooms into its page, and Library on the page zooms back out.
  • Box art: Get box art downloads the original Xbox covers of the three games from RetroArch's collection
(libretro thumbnails). Or use your own scans: put fotr.png, tt.png or rotk.png (or .jpg) in the covers
folder beside Athelas. Without either, each box gets a cover made from the game's own art.
  • The Return of the King is one box for both versions. With both, Play and Settings ask PC or Xbox, and can
remember your choice ("Ask which version" under the box undoes it).
  • Games you haven't added show as faded boxes with the buttons to add them.
  • With a controller: A plays, X opens Settings, Y gets box art; Y on a page goes back to the carousel.
  • The settings pages are centred, and the game is chosen on the carousel instead of from menus.
  • Disc images named .xiso are listed when you add a game, as well as .iso.

New in the games

  • The Fellowship of the Ring: chapter select (Gameplay, "New game starts at"). The game has no level select,
so this starts a new game at the beginning of any chapter: the Shire (the game's own start), the Old Forest,
Bree, Weathertop, Rivendell, Moria, Lothlórien or the River Anduin, with that chapter's hero (Aragorn at
Weathertop and the Anduin, Gandalf in Moria, Frodo elsewhere). Items and quest steps from the chapters you skip
aren't given: it's for replaying a chapter. Saved games aren't affected.
  • The Fellowship of the Ring: Combat Test (Gameplay). The developers left three test arenas in the game but
never switched them on. With this on, Bilbo's room in Rivendell offers a choice of Frodo, Aragorn or Gandalf, and
each one takes you to an arena with its own enemies. Its exit leads back to Bilbo's room.
  • The Two Towers: Sharper text (Graphics), as the other two have it: the game's letters are redrawn at four times
their size from its own fonts, so menus, hints and the between-level screens stay crisp at high resolutions.
  • Movie display: Zoom (all three Xbox ports, Graphics, Movies). Like Fit, and movies made for a square 4:3
screen fill a widescreen too, with their top and bottom cut off: Fellowship's logos and 4:3 movies, The Two
Towers' full-frame ones, ROTK's trailer. The films look the same as with Fit.
  • Also new: drag a game folder or disc image onto Athelas to add it; play time and the day last played under each
box; the games' own menu music on the carousel (The Two Towers and Fellowship; Music on/off); each page opens with
    its game's box.
  • Steam Deck and Linux: the readme now has the steps for playing through Proton (#23).

Mods for The Return of the King (PC)

Contributed by Rodrigo Vieira (#26).

  • ROTK Fix loads code mods: a mod's .dll and .ini in the game's ROTKFix\mods folder. Mods can change hits
in combat, run every frame, draw over the picture, add hotkeys and show notes on screen. A mod can also replace one
of the game's data files by putting a file with the same Data\... path in ROTKFix\mods.
  • A Mods tab on The Return of the King (PC) page lists the installed mods with their details; tick or untick one
to turn it on or off.
  • Valar Boons, an example mod that comes with Athelas, off until you turn it on: call on the blessings of
Manwë, Varda or Aulë with the number keys (more damage, a shield that strikes back, or blows that can't hit hard),
each with its own glow around the screen and a cooldown. Everything is set in ValarBoons.ini.

Fixes

  • The Fellowship of the Ring: crash at a scene change (#21, #25). Besides
its main thread the game has a timer thread. On the Xbox both shared one processor; on a PC they ran at the same
time, and the most likely cause of the crash is the timer writing into an object the main thread had just
freed. They now take turns, as on the console: the timer runs whenever the main thread waits, reads a file or shows a frame. 1.5.1's guard stays too.

Press Update in the launcher, or unzip it over your Athelas folder: your settings, saves and achievements are
kept.

The same settings in all three Xbox ports

  • The Return of the King (Xbox) has its own settings page, laid out like The Two Towers' and Fellowship's: the
quality presets (Original, Balanced, High, Ultra), the button layout on the Controls tab, and every option of its
own as a setting (damage, unlock all, Éowyn, the cheats, translation subtitles, second controller), with a Network
tab for co-op. Up to 1.5 it shared the PC version's ROTKFix.ini; the first time Athelas opens the new page, your
choices and button layout are brought over from it. (ROTK Fix's Special button and layouts using Back, Start or
the D-pad have no counterpart in the new layout and go back to the game's own.)
  • Button pictures in The Two Towers and Fellowship (Controls tab), as ROTK already had: the game's hints and
menus show Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo buttons, or the keyboard's keys. Auto follows what you play with.
  • Fellowship: Sharper text (Graphics tab), as ROTK has: the game's text (menus, hints, dialogue, the quest
journal) is drawn at three times its size, so it stays sharp at high resolutions.
  • The Two Towers: Unlock all levels and characters (every level, Isildur and the extras from the start, as
once the game is beaten; your saved progress isn't changed) and Smooth leaf edges (with anti-aliasing on).
  • The Return of the King (Xbox): Skip opening logos (once you have a save, the game opens with the EA and
New Line logos; this goes straight past them).
  • Movie subtitles (all three, Graphics tab, Movies): the games have no subtitles for their film clips, so the
ports now show them from subtitle files: put an .srt file named as the movie (fmv_2.srt, HELMFMV1.srt,
mont.srt; the log names each movie as it starts) in the game's subtitles folder (Open folder on the same tab).
  • F1 hides the HUD in The Return of the King and Fellowship too (for screenshots), as it did in The Two Towers.
  • The damage settings run from 10% to 500% in all three.
  • Some of ROTK's options aren't in the other two because there they would change nothing: draw distance (neither
game ever cuts off distant scenery), the TV-safe border (both fill the screen already), Skip any video in
Fellowship (all its movies skip already), and HUD at the screen edges in Fellowship (its own widescreen mode puts
    the HUD there).

Fixes

  • DLSS didn't upscale in the Xbox ports since 1.5: NVIDIA's Streamline turned down each frame, so the game showed
its render resolution stretched instead (and wrote an error to the log at every frame). DLSS now runs; if an
upscaler ever turns a frame down, the log says so.
  • With DLSS on, closing the game could end in "the game closed unexpectedly": NVIDIA's DLSS files crashed in
their own clean-up after the game had already closed. The game now ends without running it.
  • The Two Towers, keyboard: Enter didn't press Start on the title screen (#8), since 1.5's
fix for #17. Enter presses Start on the title and main menu again; the Yes/No pop-ups between levels still work.
  • Xbox 360 controllers (wireless receiver) not working in the Xbox ports (#18): Xbox
controllers go through XInput again (other controllers still through Windows.Gaming.Input).
  • The Fellowship of the Ring: crash entering Bywater (#21) while the game cleaned up after
the scene change: an object's data had been written over. The clean-up now checks it and leaves damaged parts
    out instead of closing.
