The point of consistency is so that there isn't a top down overlord dictating your entire system. Who knows, maybe something about your system is better? There are a few options for you going forward.

Overall this is the better answer. Either the parent project should be made more flexible or refactored in a way to allow for your customization or at a minimum start a conversation.
