I understand that this has now been theoretically replaced by @font-face. However after the death of Flash, embedding custom fonts into HTML5 banners has been, well, improbable.
With Cufon in just around 20KB (Zipped) I can have a font embedded. This saves so much time with HTML5 banners it's incredible. No need for a sprite sheet for every single size or any other funky business.
However, the problem is, technology like inline SVG break Cufon in Safari.
I think Cufon could come back as the replacement for embedding text now Flash has died.

Honestly it's highly unlikely any more development will be done, at least
on my part. It doesn't make sense to invest in a dying technology that only
has niche use cases. If someone wanted to shell out a sizable chunk of
money for an update, then that might be a different story, but other than
that this is what you get pretty much.
