The pre-push format check refused the previous push: the new QA suite was
written without a prettier run, and it reached the tree unformatted.

The staged leg of the gate does not check tests/ for formatting - the wide
check at pre-push does - so a file added under tests/ can be committed
unformatted and only refused when the push gate runs.
