There are different methods of collecting the specimens:

  • for terrestrial invertebrates there are used entomological nets (flying ones), different pitfall traps (walking ones) or even by hand collection
  • for aquatic vertebrates there are used some fishing gears (e.g stavnik) which doesn't damage the animal (e.g fishes, sea turtles, dolphins etc. In some cases there are the big sea waves which bring the animals in the coast e.g the whale which is exposed in the Museum Natural Sciences in Albania)
  • for terrestrial mammal there are used some traps (sometimes the animal for collection is found sick or even killed and the leather is cleaned, given the shape of the animal and is used for the museum collection)

Thanks for the examples @Blerina01, we should incorporate them.

SESAR has a vocabulary for geo samples: http://www.geosamples.org/help/vocabularies#collection

Does anyone know of anything similar for biological samples? Collection Trust lists a few examples: https://collectionstrust.org.uk/resource/field-collection-method/

There was also a suggestion in the index sheet to use https://www.dublincore.org/specifications/dublin-core/collection-description/accrual-method/. I'd say that this is valid, but maybe not for this property, which is more about field collection (need to make the definition clearer in that respect). Collection accrual method might be appropriate as a seperate property, or part of the CollectionHistory class?

Agreed. That distinction is a good one.

If this term defines how an object was collected in the Field the link http://www.geosamples.org/help/vocabularies#collection
appears to comprehensively fit main Earth Science field collection methods.

For the definition, the Collections Trust approach seems quite clear and simple: https://collectionstrust.org.uk/resource/field-collection-method/

and we could rename this property to fieldCollectionMethod

Hi all,
If this is about how the specimen was obtained in the field, how is it really different from dwc:samplingProtocol? Could this be re-used?
Not sure I see the difference comparing both definitions...

  1. changed field name from collectionMethod to fieldCollectionMethod
  2. added new label to note this. label is "name changed"
  3. adding new issue (need to use Maarten's template) for accrualMethod under Collection Description Class. See Property:accrualMethod #241
  4. Log that this happened (add new property label).

Updated the property name and mapping to adopt @pzermoglio's suggestion: no need to duplicate dwc:samplingProtocol
