Status of terms.tdwg.org wiki #26
Comments
I second this. We need to redirect at least the DwC and AC pages - no one on the AC maintenance group even knows how to access the terms.tdwg.org pages, so they definitely will continue to be more out of data as time goes on. |
I echo the same for DwC.

Discussed today at the TDWG Executive committee. It is a known issue that people are confused and TDWG would like to see this resolved and simplified. Can we 1) invite the wiki owners/editors to comment on their ideas and what they use it for and 2) document options for TDWG to consider, please? |
We do not maintain the Darwin Core terms on terms.tdwg.org.

I have been in touch with the recent editors of terms.tdwg.org and discussed at yesterday's TDWG XC meeting. terms.tdwg.org is used and referred to in recent papers, particularly for the ABCD work. Unless anyone raises an issue with this, I'll do that in the coming days. If you support this please hit the "thumbs up". |
Rather than "in N months," be clear about a date--even with a counter, browser updating issues could be a problem. Otherwise thumbs up. |
Thanks, Tim. Thumbs up from me.

If by "the page will be deleted" you mean "the old content will be deleted" that's fine. But I would recommend keeping the disclaimer indefinitely as a little tombstone page, given (as you say) that there exist durable publications that contain these URLs. |
Let's do this now. I think that @DavidFichtmueller has write access and can make the changes. Here is what I propose. Add the statement
to the top of the terms.tdwg.org page. If possible, inserting the meta tag
in the page HTML would be awesome because Google keeps putting the outdated pages at the top of its search results. Here are the documents that need the statement:
The Darwin Core page https://terms.tdwg.org/wiki/Darwin_Core already has a statement and link that seems to be applied to all Darwin Core-related pages. There may be other pages I'm missing, but these are the ones I know of. |
Done. All of the AC and all of the DwC pages now have warning boxes redirecting to the new page, including all of the individual terms, see for instance https://terms.tdwg.org/wiki/ac:attributionLinkURL . I have updated the warning phase a bit. Also added the magic word that the page should not be indexed (this required some modifications to the setting pages of the wiki itself). I didn't even knew that this was possible. If there are no objections I would suggest that we close this ticket now, as the main concerns were addressed while the wiki itself is still used for vocabularies. |
Thanks, David! This is awesome. |
I think this is resolved now and no one has made any further comments, so I'm closing it. |
Hi,
Could the TAG clarify the status of https://terms.tdwg.org/ ?
The Darwin Core term pages are no longer maintained (discussion is now on Github) and similarly for Audubon Core (see tdwg/ac#142 )
However, these pages are still highly ranked in Google, and referred to by users of the standards -- therefore they don't get the best information.
There are occasional edits to other pages, e.g. ABCD, but very few: https://terms.tdwg.org/w/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&days=600 (edits in the last 600 days).
Could the TAG consider whether this wiki should be taken down and replaced with redirects to other resources? Or redirects added only for the DWC and AC pages? (I don't know who hosts the wiki, it's not on a GBIF server.)
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
