Fix compilation errors with bad config flags

Before this release, the crate didn't really work.
As a result, previous versions will be yanked because they don't reliably work and violate safety guarantees.

Other changes:

• Support rust versions since 1.54
  • Document MSRV
• Add abortcli example which just prints & aborts
