Use pyodbc instead of PyTd?

Is it possible to use pyodbc instead of PyTd as the underlying way of talking to Teradata SQL database? How much work is it to go this way? I'm interested in replacing PyTd with pyodbc as PyTd seems inactive and doesn't respond to user's issues. Any guidance on this?
