Getting Started with GitHub Discussions

The Quire Community Forum is hosted on GitHub Discussions. This documentation will assist you in signing up for a new GitHub account and learning how to participate in the forum. The forum is a place where you can ask and answer questions, share your finished projects, provide feedback, and assist your fellow community members. Before getting started, please look over and familiarize yourself with the Quire Code of Conduct.

Create a GitHub Account

To use GitHub as a project management tool and participate in the community forum, you will first need to create a GitHub account.

1. Sign up for a new account by clicking here.
2. Enter your email address and follow the prompts on the screen.

Start a Discussion

1. Before starting a new discussion, we recommend searching through the existing discussions to see if your questions have already been answered. Type your keyword in the search bar. You can also filter the type of discussion you are looking for by clicking on one of the categories located on the left side of the screen:

2. To create a new discussion, click on “New Discussion.”

3. Click the “Select Category” drop-down menu and choose a category for your discussion. Categories include:

4. After typing a title and body for your discussion, click “Start Discussion.” Note that the body text will be formatted in Markdown, but the “Preview” option allows you to view how the discussion will appear once posted.

Respond to a Discussion

When responding to GitHub discussions, you can either comment directly on the post:

Receive Discussion Notifications

If you would like to receive alerts about new posts and ongoing discussions on the forum, please follow these steps:

1. At the upper right-hand corner, click the “Watch” button.

2. In the drop-down menu, click the “Custom” option.

3. Choose “Discussions.” (You can also choose “Issues” if you are interested in contributing to the repository.)

Additional Tips

• To link relevant discussions, pull requests, or issues in your posts, type the pound symbol, followed by the number of the discussion you wish to reference (EX: #00).

• To mention or respond to a specific user, type the at symbol, followed by the GitHub username of the person you want to include (EX: @quireuser01).

• Do not use the forum to report bugs and other issues or to propose contributions. Those can be submitted via GitHub Issues.
