Steps to launch using docker and docker-compose

  1. update ports in config.yml 80 -> 8080

  2. docker-compose up -d --build

  3. docker-compose exec mysql bash

  4. mysql -p < app/sql.txt

Application is now available at localhost:8080

In the process of patching the web application, it may be useful to run it locally on your own computer. Below is a set of working instructions for deploying and running the web application on a Windows machine. It has been tested on a fresh install of Windows 10 on a VM. The setup will likely be similar with Mac OS X, but I don't have a ready made procedure for deploying on Mac.

  1. In order to run PHP on windows you must download and install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

  2. Download php7.0.x, the thread safe version, from http://windows.php.net/download#php-7.0 Due to unwanted errors, please don't go any further before you have completed this step. Please be patient. :)

  3. Extract the downloaded archive to <your_php_directory>. For example in "C:\Program Files\Php".

  4. Open PowerShell, and type

             setx path "%path%;<your_php_directory>"

    Restart PowerShell.

  5. Download and install XAMPP to c:\xampp (or another directory without special permissions). Download XAMPP from here: https://www.apachefriends.org/xampp-files/7.2.2/xampp-win32-7.2.2-0-VC15-installer.exe

  6. Delete the contents of C:\xampp\htdocs

  7. Open the XAMPP Control Panel. Click on "Config" next to Apache, then choose "Apache httpd.conf".

    • Replace ' DocumentRoot "C:/xampp/apache/htdocs" ' with ' DocumentRoot "C:/xampp/apache/htdocs/tdt4237-public/public" '.
    • Replace ' <Directory "C:/xampp/htdocs"> ' with ' <Directory "C:/xampp/htdocs/tdt4237-public/public"> '.
    • Save the file and close it.
  8. Download this GitHub repository and change the folder name from "tdt4237-public-master" to "tdt4237-public". Extract the folder to "c:\xampp\htdocs" .

    OR you could download the repository by using the git command in PowerShell:

                cd "c:\xampp\htdocs\"
                git clone https://github.com/magnublo/tdt4237-public.git

(Note that the last option requires you have git installed)

  1. You should now have a path that looks like this: "C:\xampp\htdocs\tdt4237-public", containing the web application files. Next, download and install Composer. Click next on everything. https://getcomposer.org/Composer-Setup.exe

  2. In PowerShell, enter

            cd "c:\xampp\htdocs\tdt4237-public\"
            composer install

  3. Open XAMPP Control Panel. Make sure to start Apache and MySQL. Click on "Admin" next to MySQL. This should open phpMyAdmin in your web-rowser. This is the interface of your database. Click the tab that says "SQL". Copy ALL of the SQL code below and paste it into the text field and execute:

create database inventory;
use inventory;
SET SQL_MODE = "NO_AUTO_VALUE_ON_ZERO";
SET time_zone = "+00:00";

Furthermore, many Grass Pokemon have Poison as their secondary type, adding a Psychic vulnerability. The type combination with the most weaknesses is Grass/Psychic.', '2017-03-08 22:15:15', 'user1'),
(2, 'Fire pokemons', 'Fire is one of the three basic elemental types along with Water and Grass, which constitute the three starter Pokemon. Fire types are notoriously rare in the early stages of the games so choosing the Fire variation starter is often a plus.', '2017-03-08 22:20:04', 'user1'),

This creates a simple triangle to explain the type concept easily to new players. The situation improved in later games with better moves and an advantage against the Dark type.', '2017-03-08 22:28:30', 'user1'),
(5, 'Normal pokemons', 'The Normal type is the most basic type of Pokemon. They are very common and appear from the very first route you visit. (6, 'Electric pokemons', 'There are relatively few Electric Pokemon; in fact only four were added in the third generation. Most are based on rodents or inanimate objects. Electric Pokemon are very good defensively, being weak only to Ground moves. Eelektross is the only Pokemon to have no type disadvantages due to its ability, Levitate.', '2017-03-08 22:40:32', 'user1');

If you haven't already, click "Do/Execute" in the far right corner to execute the SQL script and setup the inventory database. Restart Apache and MySQL.

  1. Go to http://localhost:80 in your web browser and enjoy.

NOTICE: You may try using another web server software, but the Pokedex AS application is a bit picky with server software configuration. The $_GET variable needs to be populated with the URL string, so that when you enter http://localhost/thisIsAURLString, var_dump($_GET); must return array(1) { ["url"]=> string(16) "thisIsAURLString" }. XAMPP Apache behaves like this by default, so it's practical and easy to use.
