Each log directory opened its own worker thread and database connection for WAL checkpoints. A process that logs into many directories, such as the platform writing one store per deployment, paid a thread per directory. One worker now serves every store, keyed by database file, and shuts down when the last store closes.

scripts/verify/store.mjs asserts that opening eight stores does not grow the process thread count.
