The Tools Project: a Tools System and Paradigm for IT Production README ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary ======= Introduction What is it ? Description See also ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction ============ I've first created these tools for one of my clients in 1997, when he ask to me to create his central production site. Since this date, these tools have been greatly developed and extended - thanks to the numerous authors. A database repository and a web interface have been added. I decide recently to publish these tools under GPL, creating so what is now to be called The Tools Project (TTP) :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- What is it ? ============ The Tools Project (TTP) targets targets IT teams who work in a *nix- like (1) environment. It materializes a work paradigm where all environments managed by our IT team use the exact same version of scripts and configuration files. No more install scripts where we must slightly update scripts or configuration files when moving from an environment to another and this implies a much better quality of these moves. Instead of this painful work, just one configuration file which contains all parameters required for all managed environments. No more scripts which must be modified for targeting one SGBD or another depending of the current environment. Instead of that, just one configuration file which contains all parameters required for all managed environments. As a plus, The Tools Project brings to the daily usage in a *nix-like platform some comfortable enhancements: - usage of the system environment is minimized as this is a limited resource; instead of having accounts whose system environments happen to be polluted by the environment variables set by each and every application component (file transfer, sgbd monitor, and so on), needed variables are internally set by the TTP scripts themselves; - commands and their verbs are well identified, and safe to be discovered; they are self-explanatory; this let the IT team safely play with and learn every command; - executions are logged, temporary files are kept; I repeat: all execution of any TTP command are logged, all temporary files are kept; this is at last the dream of the Security Officer! - commands and verbs build a standardized API for the developers, thus easying the transfert to the production. As an executive summary, we can claim TTP tools as the next step to an ideal industrialization process of the IT production team. Do you aim to be ITIL compliant ? You need it. Do you aim to to make your devops happpy ? You cannot miss it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Description =========== TTP tools are a set of shell (and sometimes perl, awk and so on) scripts and text configuration files who are to be considered as a complete (*nix-like) production library. This library is to be used by business developers and engineers in order to safely and completely access to the production services. In a typical production site, you have many applications who all share some sgbd engines, maybe one or more schedulers and file transfer monitors. The infrastructure can implement some middleware, and the business interfaces can be implemented under Tomcat or another application server. Thus these tools should address all of these products, or can be easily extended to another new product. But business developer who writes a script for his application doesn't want to know anything about all the gory details of the infrastructure. Nothing about the detailed interface to the file transfer monitor, or to the used middleware. And more, he doesn't want to be impacted when it staff decides to migrate to another middleware product. So these tools are also an abstraction layer between the actual products and their commands, and the business application. The production site is typically built with more than one machine, and often with many. All these machines execute different services, but its staff (usually) wants that the start/stop/use scripts of these services be maintained coherent and consistent beetween these machines. So these tools are completely banalized. On each machine, you deploy the same set of scripts. This set includes the needed parameters for all machines, including of course the current one. And when a engineer creates a script, or fixes a bug in an existing one, the new script can and should be safely deployed in all the machines. Usually, the developers write and test their scripts in a test environment before deploying them in production environment. And they do not want modify any line of code for this deploiement. The tools define the same command for a given service in all knwown environments, making so easier to go to production, with much less errors due to the deploiement. Last but not least, when the production site has many machines, its engineers use their times ssh-ing from one machine to another, to test or act on a given service. These tools know about the exact localization of each service, in each known environment. They ssh themselves - transparently to the current user - to the needed machines for a given service... And, yes, these tools know ssh also when the used account need to be changed for a particular service...
