Pings given IP / hostname and returns hostname / IP and delay. Used to check (reverse)DNS lookup and accesibility of the target. (Yes, all can be done via CLI ping command. This is a simple technology integration project)
Utilizes Apache, bootstrap, JS, Perl and a small C program to invoke Perl script w/ setuid.
- Modify "httpd-hostping.conf" according to your directory structure.
- Add "httpd-hostping.conf" to apache configuration.
- Run apache web server.
- Go to the hostping page.
Notes for Apache http configuration ;
- mod_cgi must be loaded
- user running apache http server should be able to access and write log directory
- check User and Group directives
Containerization notes ;
Use Docker file to create docker container that runs HostPing service. HostPing service requires container to access "outside" world, which is possible with "host" networking of docker. However it is only usable in Linux host environments.
To build and run HostPing container
% docker build -t hostping:latest .
% docker run --rm -it --network host hostping:latest
and access the service http://localhost/hostping
For other environments (Windows and MacOS) use Vagrant to run HostPing container on a (vagrant) linux box.
Simply "up" vagrant environment
% vagrant up
and access the service http://localhost:8081/hostping
