I don't like this. This fixes a regression caused by vala-panel-applet: https://gitlab.com/vala-panel-project/vala-panel-appmenu/commit/c5d20e73d47ea4805697553401fcb7633fc402ac and I think that commit should be reverted, but in the meantime this should work. There are definitely cleaner ways of doing this, but may require refactoring the code some more...
