Should we limit this to the template only?
Wonder if we need this for event specific sites

Hmmm, good point! This would be a good case for a .github/.template-ignore as discussed here (https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/22183) but isn't implemented yet. Since in reality we mostly update this repository a couple times a year, happy to close this and just stick to manual bumps
