First public release of TypeNova, an open-source desktop Markdown editor where every heading is a node of an explorable graph. Everything runs locally: your .md files stay the source of truth, with no cloud account, no telemetry and no AI involved.

Highlights

Section graph

  • Every heading is a node; sections are linked to their parents, children and neighbours and by [[Section name]] links
  • Three views: flat canvas, tree and 3D globe, with a section preview right in the graph
  • Text and file/folder filters for large projects

Editor and preview

  • CodeMirror 6 editor with a formatting toolbar, section path bar (scrolls with the mouse wheel), minimap and command palette (Ctrl+K)
  • Live preview with math (KaTeX), Mermaid diagrams and highlighted code
  • Click an image or a diagram to open it in a viewer with zoom, pan, fit and full screen
  • Paste an image with Ctrl+V: choose a description, a file name and a folder inside your project, and the Markdown reference is inserted at the caret
  • Scroll position is remembered per document, also across restarts

Projects and tabs

  • Several folders in one project tree, with its own scrollbar, a Refresh button and automatic refresh when files change on disk
  • Drag files or folders from the file explorer onto the window to open them
  • Tabs scroll with the mouse wheel and can be reordered by dragging
  • Drag a tab out of the tab strip to open it in its own window, or drop it onto another TypeNova window (a placeholder tab shows where it will land; unsaved edits travel with it)

Hidden sections

  • Right-click a heading in the table of contents to hide its section from the editor, the preview, print and export
  • Stored in <file>.md.config.json next to the document; the Markdown file is never modified

Quality of life

  • English and Polish interface
  • Image path suggestions filter by prefix as you type
  • Browser features of the embedded webview (developer tools, reload, zoom and similar shortcuts) are turned off

Installation

Download the Windows installer (.exe or .msi) from the assets below, or build from source:

A small demo project to explore the graph is included in examples/demo-vault.

Known limitations

  • Pre-1.0: expect rough edges and changes between releases. Keep a backup of anything important.
  • Developed and tested on Windows. Linux and macOS builds are untested.
  • The installers are not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning.
  • Hidden sections need a saved document, and their config file does not follow a file that is renamed inside TypeNova.
