The previous W3C translation workflow asked volunteer translators to signal their intent to translate a given document on the w3c-translators mailing list and relied on translators to check that list and the list of existing translations to avoid duplication of work.

The issues with this are:

  • it requires checking two places to find what is to be translated
  • it does not help direct translators to existing translation efforts to which they could collaborate
  • it does not help direct translators toward work for which translations would have higher priority
  • it is not clear when a given "intent to translate" expires (e.g. due to inaction from the volunteer translator)

Proposed approach in the new system:

  • volunteer translator gives intent to translate on github (probably by raising an issue on a relevant repo)
  • that intent gets automatically signaled to other translators of that language who have signed up for this notification (e.g. because they want to help)
  • this intent to translate is automatically reflected in the listing of W3C documents that are to be translated
  • the intent to translate ideally points at another repository where the translation is being developed, making it easy for others to jump in at any time, as well as determining if a given effort stalls

I follow the email now for close to two decades, it gives a quick overview of who is doing what, takes a few seconds to fly over, click on a link of a document to be translated and mostly goes into the trash can if it's not interesting.
Sometimes the email gives some ideas of what to translate next, even if it is for another language. It is a very time efficient way to stay informed. Please consider keeping the mailing list.

I've raised #8 to address specifically that idea, thanks!
