Can't start in dev mode (Uncaught Exception: Could not locate bindings file...) #192

I am using Mac Sierra (10.12.6) and tried various versions of node using n and I downloaded the source then ran npm install followed by npm run dev as the README states, but I keep getting this error:

Uncaught Exception: Could not locate bindings file...
