yii_frontpage

What do you think about such structure (not visual design) of the front page?

The main (or probably the only) goal of the front page is to convert new visitors into using Yii.

IMO, below is the list of sections (listed in their display order) that should be displayed on this page.

  1. explain what is Yii and associate it with an easy-to-remember slogan.
  2. display next steps in order to try Yii (install Yii, introductory tutorial or video)
  3. summarize the main benefits of using Yii (this part is very important as it is the only part showing the real thing).
  4. list well-known websites built on Yii (and possibly some quote from each)
  5. list common Yii resource links (e.g. FB, Twitter, GitHub etc.)

Feel free to discuss more about this page. This page deserves the greatest attention and focus.

I was refererring to https://goodui.org/ when creating this draft.

I don't think 5. really belongs to the front page.

That's a general guideline for page designs. Here we are talking about front page only.
When I was writing down the above list, I was imagining myself as a new user who just hit the front page and would like to be led for the next action.

Point 5 is at the bottom of the page. It is for those users who want to keep an eye on Yii (but not necessarily using Yii right away).

That's guideline for landing pages mainly where conversion is the only thing that matters.

IMHO, your proposed has these drawbacks:

  • It lacks the explanation of what is Yii. This is important for both SEO purpose and giving readers a general idea of what they are looking at.
  • PHP. Less Noise. More signal. vs. Made by professionals, Rich, Fast, Secure: They are repeating the same thing in some sense. And they are rather empty by themselves.
  • The quotes: better be associated with screenshots, and they should come from well-known websites to be more convincing. An anonymous quote definitely doesn't belong here.

Yes, just as I wrote, it's all about conversion.

Yeah, we need to get some real quotes. I'd suggest asking these projects first:

I'm more for logos rather than screenshots, would look much cleaner.

Some phrases:

  • "highly flexible, if you feel you need to replace core parts when you need them to behave differently from the default"
  • "Yii tries to give maximum functionality with adding as less overhead as possible"
