@github-actions github-actions released this 06 Nov 09:25

A dev release: a test build on the way to v1.0.0, for trying what's next early. It can have bugs. If you'd rather wait, stay on v0.10.0: on the Release update channel, its launcher doesn't offer dev releases.

The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation. You need your own copy of the game as an Xbox 360 disc image (title 454108C0): the English, Italian and Spanish edition, which is also disc 1 of that edition's Ultimate Edition. This download contains no game code or data; the installer builds the game from your ISO on your PC.

Install or update (Windows)

  • From v0.10.0-dev.6 or later: with Configure → Advanced → Update channel set to Dev, the launcher offers this update itself.
  • Otherwise, or for a new install: download DAORecomp.exe below, run it and pick your install folder (or a new one). It isn't code-signed, so Windows may warn: More info → Run anyway. An update only rebuilds what changed, and your saves, settings and mods are kept. Under Wine or Proton, update the checkout (git pull) and run python3 install.py --dest <install folder> again.
  • DAORecomp-Installer.exe is the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.

Fixed

  • Blocky conversation blur (from v1.0.0-dev.4): in some scenes the game's own depth of field still came out in hard blocks at a resolution scale above 1, despite the smoothing added in dev.4. It's now smooth in those scenes too. The same report describes a flicker when picking a dialogue option. It's probably the same bug, but we couldn't reproduce it, so please tell us if you still see it. Thanks to @PszekWorobej for the report (#13).
  • Converted PC body mods: the Convert button kept the PC models' bone numbers, which differ from the Xbox 360's, so converted bodies such as Natural Bodies All in One had twisted arms and hands stretched into spikes. Bones are now matched by name against the game's own models. Mods you've already converted don't change: convert them again from the original PC files. If a mod ships a skinned body mesh without its .mmh, the converter now stops and says so, so keep the .mmh files in the mod. Checked in game on human and dwarf bodies, male and female, and on a female elf. Qunari and distant models aren't confirmed yet. Thanks to @binks2091 for the report and for pointing at the bones (#14).

In v1.0.0-dev.4

  • The console's conversation blur can be switched off: Configure → Graphics → Console depth of field in conversations (or the in-game Graphics tab, while you play). It stays on by default (#13).
  • SMAA anti-aliasing: with temporal upscaling off, Configure → Graphics → Anti-aliasing (or the in-game Graphics tab) can pick SMAA instead of the game's own 2xMSAA. It's faster, with edges about as smooth, though thin details may shimmer a little more in motion. 2xMSAA stays the default.
  • Fixed: thin streaks in the conversation blur at higher resolutions (#13), and upscalers switching themselves off on the main menu with post-processing off.

In v1.0.0-dev.2

  • Glow at higher resolutions: the glow around bright things no longer breaks up into sharp copies of their edges at a resolution scale above 1 (#11).

In v1.0.0-dev.1

  • Texture packs: PC texture packs (.dds files) go in the texture packs folder next to the game's and replace the game's textures on the graphics card only, with a Texture Packs page in the launcher and F9 in the game to compare.
  • DLC at install: setup takes the Ultimate Edition's second disc image (or packages from an Xbox 360) and installs the DLC and title update with the game.
  • Removed: neural rendering and its frame rate guard (and the F6 key).
  • Fixed: the shader cache in builds for Android (thanks to @udarmolota), and a damaged or crafted shader cache file can no longer make the game read past a shader's code.

  • DAORecomp-Installer.exe is the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.

New

  • The console's conversation blur can be switched off: Configure → Graphics → Console depth of field in conversations (or the in-game Graphics tab, while you play) turns off the game's own depth of field, its light blur behind and in front of the people speaking. With temporal upscaling, the recomp's own depth of field then blurs the scene alone instead of over the console's; without it, conversations stay sharp. It also saves about 0.2 ms a frame in conversations. It stays on by default, as before. As promised in #13.
  • SMAA anti-aliasing: with temporal upscaling off, Configure → Graphics → Anti-aliasing (or the in-game Graphics tab) can now pick SMAA instead of the game's own 2xMSAA. The game then draws its scene once instead of twice, so it's faster (about 20% less GPU time at 720p and 15% at 4K on an RX 9070 XT), with edges about as smooth. Thin details may shimmer a little more in motion. 2xMSAA stays the default.

Fixed

  • Conversation blur at higher resolutions: with a resolution scale above 1, the game's own depth of field in conversations left thin streaks and hard-edged blocks in the blurred background. Its blur is now drawn at the console's resolution and blended smoothly, and costs a little less. Thanks to @PszekWorobej for the report and the comparison footage (#13).
  • Upscalers on the main menu with post-processing off: they kept switching themselves off there, with a few unsteady frames every few seconds. They now stay on.

Fixed

  • Glow at higher resolutions: with a resolution scale above 1 (such as 1440p or 4K), the glow around bright things broke up into sharp copies of their edges: a second nose or ear on characters, doubled spears and arms, halos beside towers and arches. The game's glow is made for the console's resolution, and at a higher one its blur left gaps. It's now drawn at the console's resolution, as on the Xbox 360, and costs a little less. Thanks to @PszekWorobej for the report and the side-by-side screenshots (#11).

In v1.0.0-dev.1

  • Texture packs: PC texture packs (.dds files) go in the texture packs folder next to the game's and replace the game's textures on the graphics card only, with a Texture Packs page in the launcher and F9 in the game to compare.

  • DAORecomp-Installer.exe is the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.

New

  • Texture packs: PC texture packs (.dds files, such as AP Neural Enhanced Diffusion Textures on Nexus Mods) go in the texture packs folder next to the game's, and replace the game's textures of the same name on the graphics card only, up to 16384 pixels wide. They also replace the game's copies of those textures under other names, such as the smaller ones distant models use. They load in the background, so a texture may sharpen a moment after it appears; the frame rate isn't affected.
    • The launcher has a Texture Packs page: turn them on and off, see how many of each pack's files are used and why the others aren't, and set a size limit and how much graphics memory they may take (for the Steam Deck or cards with 4 GB or less).
    • In the game, F9 switches between the packs' textures and the game's own, to compare.
    • Colour textures take DXT1, DXT3, DXT5 or BC7 files, and normal maps take BC5 files. Packs made for the PC version's own textures (such as its terrain palettes) or for DLC areas aren't used.
  • DLC at install: setup has an optional Downloadable content and title update field. Give it the Ultimate Edition's second disc image as it is (nothing to extract), packages copied from an Xbox 360, or a folder of them, and the DLC and title update are installed with the game in one go. The launcher's Downloadable Content page takes the disc image too.

Removed

  • Neural rendering and its frame rate guard (and the F6 key). Updating removes the files it installed: LmxxfNrRuntime.dll, the neural folder, DLSS5-AMD/default-config.txt and its logs, and lmxxf's license files. Files you added there stay.

Fixed

  • Shader cache in builds for Android: it was rewritten from scratch on every start, so the party portraits could be empty after loading there too (the other half of #7). Thanks to @udarmolota.
  • Shader cache safety: a damaged or crafted shader cache file can no longer make the game read past a shader's code at startup.

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Oct 16:27

The Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360) recompilation: cinematic depth of field in conversations, crash fixes, safer saves, a smoother frame rate, and a game language setting. Everything from the v0.10.0 dev releases is in it.

You need your own copy of the game as an Xbox 360 disc image (title 454108C0). This download contains no game code or data; the installer builds the game from your ISO on your PC.

Install or update (Windows)

  • Updating from v0.10.0-dev.6 or later: the launcher offers this update itself (Update on its main menu).
  • Updating from v0.10.0-dev.5 or older (including v0.9.0): those launchers can't see new releases since the repository was renamed (#6). Download DAORecomp.exe below, run it and pick the same install folder. This is needed once.
  • New install: download DAORecomp.exe below and run it. It isn't code-signed, so Windows may warn: More info → Run anyway. Pick the ISO and an install folder, accept the build tools license, and press Install. When it's done, the same exe becomes the game's launcher. An update only rebuilds what changed, and your saves, settings and mods are kept.
  • DAORecomp-Installer.exe is the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.

New

  • Depth of field in conversations: conversations and cutscene shots get a cinematic depth of field from the scene's depth: the people nearest the camera stay sharp, and the scene behind them is softly blurred, as a film camera's lens does. It needs temporal upscaling (FSR 4, DLSS and the others) and is on by default: Depth of field in conversations in the launcher's Configure page and in Options → Graphics. It costs under 1 ms a frame at 4K.
  • F11 switches between fullscreen and a window until the game is closed (Options → Graphics → Fullscreen saves it).
  • Game language: English, Italian or Spanish, in Configure → Advanced → Game language. The voices stay English, as in the original release.
  • Update channels (Configure → Advanced → Update channel): Release offers releases like this one; Dev offers the dev releases between them too.
  • START menu rows: Photo Mode and Cheats have rows of their own in the game's START menu.
  • Frame rate guard for neural rendering: fades the network out while the GPU can't hold the frame rate, and back in when there's room.

Fixed

  • Crashes:
    • "Indirect call to unrecompiled address 82D7D244", on arriving in Aeducan Thaig and in combat in the Carta Hideout, on the disc and Title Updates 6 and 7. Thanks to @johnhutchinson1998-ctrl (#5).
    • Loading a save while an area is still streaming in (seen loading Ostagar after Awakening).
    • Four jump tables the recompiler had missed, one of them in Title Update 6's downloadable-content check.
  • Party portraits on the HUD could be empty or wrong after loading: the shader cache wasn't being saved for installed copies. Thanks to @udarmolota (#7).
  • Updates from the launcher work again after the repository's rename. Thanks to @johnhutchinson1998-ctrl (#6).
  • Safer saves: the old save is kept until the new one is written, a message says when there isn't room, and closing the window waits for a save to finish.
  • Smoother frame rate: far fewer access faults on memory the GPU caches, and the vsync wait no longer oversleeps (a test scene that dipped to about 50 fps now holds 60).
  • Temporal upscaling: the screen's border no longer jitters, and full-screen 2D is no longer jittered. Thanks to @lvaskys (#4).
  • Motion vectors no longer crash under Wine/Proton. Thanks to @lvaskys (#1).
  • Closer to the console: a set of small kernel, sound and timer fixes, and the game's executable is checked before it's patched.

A dev release: a test build on the way to v0.10.0, for trying what's next early. It can have bugs. If you'd rather wait, stay on v0.9.0: its launcher doesn't offer dev releases.

  • From v0.10.0-dev.6: the launcher offers this update itself.
  • From dev.5 or older: update by hand this once, since those launchers don't see new releases after the repository's rename. Download DAORecomp.exe below, run it and pick your install folder (or a new one).

New

  • Party portraits after loading: the round portraits on the HUD could be empty or show the wrong picture after the first load since starting the game, until a conversation. The shader cache wasn't being saved for installs built by the installer (every write to it failed), so each start prepared the same shaders again, and a portrait drawn while its shader was still being prepared was left out. The cache now keeps growing, so after one session with a portrait on screen it shows from the start. Starts after the first should also have less to prepare. Thanks to @udarmolota for the report, the pattern and the saves (#7).

In v0.10.0-dev.6

  • Updates from the launcher work again: since the repository was renamed, the launcher skipped every release and said "Up to date". It now finds them under either name. Under Wine or Proton its update page says how to update. Thanks to @johnhutchinson1998-ctrl for tracking it down (#6).

In v0.10.0-dev.5

  • Crash fix: the game could stop with "Indirect call to unrecompiled address 82D7D244", seen on arriving in Aeducan Thaig and during combat in the Carta Hideout. A small function had been split in two by the recompiler, leaving one of its cases untranslated; it's now recompiled whole, on the disc, Title Update 6 and Title Update 7. Thanks to @johnhutchinson1998-ctrl for the report, logs and saves (#5).

Since v0.9.0 (in v0.10.0-dev.1 to dev.4)

  • Crash fixes: loading a save while an area is still streaming in (seen loading Ostagar after Awakening), and four jump tables the recompiler had missed (one in Title Update 6's downloadable-content check).
  • Temporal upscaling: the screen's border no longer jitters, and full-screen 2D is no longer jittered. Thanks to @lvaskys (#4).
  • Safer saves: the old save is kept until the new one is written, a message says when there isn't room, and closing the window waits for a save to finish.

  • From v0.10.0-dev.1, dev.2 or dev.3: the launcher offers this update itself (Update on its main menu).
  • Otherwise: download DAORecomp.exe below, run it and pick your install folder (or a new one). It isn't code-signed, so Windows may warn: More info → Run anyway. An update only rebuilds what changed, and your saves, settings and mods are kept. Launchers up to v0.9.0 don't offer dev releases, so this one is installed by hand; from then on the launcher offers the next ones itself.
  • DAORecomp-Installer.exe is the same file under its old name, for launchers before v0.5.2.

New

  • Crash fixes:
    • Loading a save while an area is still streaming in (seen loading Ostagar after Awakening) could crash the render thread. Effects whose parameters haven't loaded yet now draw without them instead.
    • Four jump tables the recompiler had missed are now recompiled. One is in Title Update 6's downloadable-content check: when that check found a problem, the game stopped instead of showing its "downloadable content is corrupt" message. The other three are in both the disc and Title Update 6 code and hadn't been seen to crash.
  • Temporal upscaling: the screen's border no longer jitters, and full-screen 2D (menus, loading screens) is no longer jittered. Thanks to @lvaskys (#4).

Since v0.9.0 (in v0.10.0-dev.1 to dev.3)

  • Game language: English, Italian or Spanish, in Configure → Advanced → Game language.
  • Update channels (Configure → Advanced → Update channel): Release, or Dev for dev releases like this one too.
  • START menu rows for Photo Mode and Cheats.
  • Frame rate guard for neural rendering.
  • Motion vectors no longer crash under Wine/Proton. Thanks to @lvaskys (#1).

v0.10.0-dev.3 (dev release)

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Oct 18:48

A dev release: a test build on the way to v0.10.0, for trying what's next early. It can have bugs. If you'd rather wait, stay on v0.9.0: its launcher doesn't offer dev releases.

  • From v0.10.0-dev.1 or dev.2: the launcher offers this update itself (Update on its main menu).

New

  • Saves are safer.
    • Saving over a save no longer risks the old one: it's set aside first, kept as a backup once the new one is written, and put back if the new one can't be made.
    • When there isn't room to keep the old save as well, the game doesn't save and a message says so (the game itself shows nothing when a save fails).
    • Closing the window while the game is writing a save now waits for the save to finish (10 s at most).
  • Smoother frame rate:
    • The game's writes to memory the GPU has cached cost far fewer access faults (about 190 a second instead of about 1,500 in a test scene).
    • With vsync on, the GPU's per-frame wait for the vblank no longer oversleeps by up to 2 ms.
    • In a test scene that dipped to about 50 fps before, it now holds 60.
  • Closer to the console: a set of small kernel fixes from a review of how the console behaves:
    • threads that end holding a lock now release it to the threads waiting for it, instead of leaving them blocked;
    • a damaged sound frame now skips ahead instead of silencing that sound for good;
    • the sound and vblank timers run at higher priority, so they stay on time under load;
    • fixes to timers, waits, the on-screen keyboard's completion and the music player's queries.
  • Loader check: the game's executable is checked against the supported disc's before it's patched or read.

Since v0.9.0 (in v0.10.0-dev.1 and dev.2)

  • Game language: English, Italian or Spanish, in Configure → Advanced → Game language.
  • Update channels (Configure → Advanced → Update channel): Release, or Dev for dev releases like this one too.
  • START menu rows for Photo Mode and Cheats.
  • Frame rate guard for neural rendering: fades the network out while the GPU can't hold the frame rate, and back in when there's room.
  • Motion vectors no longer crash under Wine/Proton. Thanks to @lvaskys (#1).
