Blood Extra Crispy in NotBlood Chosen (Android test build)

A test of the Blood Extra Crispy mod (by VGames, for Nightdive's Refreshed Supply) as a mod for NotBlood Chosen. The normal release is v1.2; this build is only for trying the mod.

The app: it's called NotBlood Crispy and installs next to NotBlood instead of replacing it. Both use the same NotBlood folder on the phone, so your Blood files, settings and saves are shared.

Setup:

  1. Install the APK. If you have never used NotBlood on this phone, copy your Blood files into the NotBlood folder first (see the v1.2 notes).
  2. Download Blood Extra Crispy v1.2 from ModDB (BEC_v1.2_RS.zip) and unpack it.
  3. Copy its BEC_1.2 folder, unchanged, into NotBlood/mods/ on the phone. The result is NotBlood/mods/BEC_1.2/EXTRAC.RFF and so on.
  4. Start NotBlood Crispy, go to MODS, choose BLOOD EXTRA CRISPY. The game restarts with the mod.

What you get:

  • Its look: the title and menu background, its edited sprites, and its 3D models (voxels) for about 570 things: switches, levers, valves, bottles, signs, lamps, chandeliers, pickups, the Maxim gun and the cannons. OPTIONS > DISPLAY SETUP > VOXELS: SOME (the default: switches, levers, valves, pickups and the mod's own things), ALL (also its wall decorations and props, slower on phones) or OFF. A level loads only the ones it uses.
  • Its sounds.
  • Its maps: the mod's versions of the official levels, with its extra decorations, gore and enemies.
  • Gory Kills: walk up to a nearly dead enemy, face it and press USE. Caleb finishes it in first person, heals a little, and kicks the body away. They work on cultists (all four), axe zombies, fat zombies, flesh gargoyles, gill beasts, innocents, hell hounds and phantasms, and on the mod's Crimson Innocents, Skeletal Zombies, crawling half zombies, zombie heads and attack dogs. The enemy must be badly hurt (below about 12 health), except innocents, heads, half zombies and dogs.
  • Its weather: rain, storms (thunder and lightning), blood rain and snow fall where its maps have them, under the open sky; on E3M2 artillery shells come down.
  • Its HUD: the revolvers' Purify (left) and Purge (right) with their countdowns, small pictures of the things the dead left that you carry, and the Vile Anathema's skull on your shoulder while its skulls fly.
  • Puke on your face (fat zombies, pods, and the red blood of Crimson Innocents) stays on the screen until you press USE: Caleb wipes it off with his hand. The green one makes your view swim for a moment.
  • Quick kick: USE on an enemy that isn't hurt enough shows Caleb's foot and kicks it back. Burning enemies, beasts, Necromancers, Liches, Monster Dogs, Slime Zombies and the Inferno always get kicked. You can kick once a second. A cultist lying shot in the belly, suffering, is finished off with USE; severed heads and gibs can be kicked away; an Odious Headstone breaks after three kicks.
  • In Bloodbath and team games you can kick other players too, and finish off one who is nearly dead (it counts as your frag). Not your team mates, and not in co-op.
  • Bots (MULTIPLAYER > PLAY WITH BOTS, or bots in a network game) pick up and use the mod's weapons, and kick and finish off other players.
  • Its new enemies, with the mod's own pictures, sounds and behaviour (read from your copy of the mod):
    • Skeletal Zombies and Crimson Innocents take the place of about two thirds of the axe zombies, and of some buried ones, which climb out of the ground. A badly hurt Skeletal Zombie jumps on your face and bites: press USE fast to push it off. Crimson Innocents punch and spew blood.
    • Attack dogs come with some of the shotgun and dynamite cultists. A dog killed by spirit damage gets back up as a Monster Dog.
    • Necromancers (instead of a tommy gun cultist for every 75 enemies in a level): they teleport away when you get close, fire skulls, raise corpses and call zombies out of the ground. Odious Headstones appear near you every few minutes while one lives, and raise zombies until you blow them up. Some dead Necromancers come back as a Lich.
    • Lesser Priests (some tommy gun and tesla cultists), rats with dynamite, Slime Zombies, the Gore Tremor (it moves underground and bursts out to bite or spit worms), Flesh Tentacles, the Inferno, Spirits and worms.
    • Shoot an axe zombie in the belly and its top half keeps crawling after you; shoot its head off and the head may keep biting.
  • More gore: head shots, belly shots and leg shots kill with the mod's own animations (half of the cultists shot in the belly lie there suffering), and spirit and tesla kills too.

Also in this build (with or without the mod): OPTIONS > GAME SETUP > WEAPON SWITCH LIST. When you switch weapons, your weapons show for a moment in a column on the right side, with the new one highlighted. It's off by default.

Choosing the mod now restarts the app by itself.

  • Its weapons: they share the number keys with Blood's; press the key again for the next one on it.
    • Caleb's revolvers (key 1) are the mod's pitchfork: twelve shots, then a reload; they never run out. Alt fire: Purify, five seconds of them shooting every enemy in sight by themselves, then ten seconds to wait. Crouch + fire: the Purge, both barrels' blast (ten seconds to wait). Crouch + alt fire: the knife.
    • Gatling Gun (key 7): it's where the Guns Akimbo powerup was. Hold fire; alt fire is its wider "overkill".
    • Devastator and rocket launcher (key 7), and the Trench Gun (key 3): pick them up where the mod's maps place them. The rocket launcher's alt fire is the nuke, which takes ten rockets. The Trench Gun's alt fire is dragon's breath.
    • Devil's Bore (key 8): it's where Beast Vision was.
    • Dual tommy guns, dual sawed-offs and dual flare guns: pick up a second one of the gun you already have.
    • Mourning Codex (key 0): it's where Reflective Shots was. One spell, then the book is gone. Fire: thirteen flesh gargoyles fight for you for 15 seconds. Alt fire: a blizzard of ice spikes around you. Crouch + fire: lightning. Crouch + alt fire: Caleb's heart opens a Death Portal that pulls enemies in. (In the mod, the last two are on the map zoom keys.)
    • Things the dead leave (pick them up with USE, key 1): an axe zombie's axe now and then (swing it, or alt fire to throw it; it can be picked up again where it lands), a Phantasm's orb (thrown, it finds the head of the enemy you look at and drills through it), and from each Necromancer either the Vile Anathema (fire: the corpses you can see rise and fight for you; alt fire: 15 seconds of skulls flying from your shoulder at what you look at) or the Bastion Chronometer (fire: 30 seconds of reflective shots; alt fire: the Doom Bell, which rings death all around it and then blows apart). Each is used once.
  • Its world weapons (USE in front of them, up to about 3 steps away):
    • Death Mower: it runs by itself for 37 seconds and shreds what's in front of it. Fire throws it away.
    • Maxim gun on its stand: USE gets behind it, USE again leaves it. JUMP rips it off its stand and you carry it (the mod uses RUN, which auto-run holds).
    • Blunderbuss: one big blast, then it's thrown away.
    • Cannons: one shot, then the cannon is empty. Carry a cannon ball to it (USE to pick it up, USE at the cannon to load it).
    • Fireworks cannon: a show of rockets, then it's thrown away.
    • The AA guns fire flak into the sky when you're near.
  • Allies (the Codex's gargoyles, the risen dead) don't attack you, and autoaim skips them. They don't count as kills.

Not included (yet): the Hero/Slasher powerups (Ash, Draven, Candyman, Leatherface, the Terminator, Krueger, Voorhees), Wrath Demon Mode, the Sword, the mod's changes to Blood's own weapons, and flying the Phantasm Orb by hand (its alt fire throws it like fire does).

Playing together: everybody needs this same build with the mod chosen. If the host has another build, who joins gets a warning when the game starts (it still starts, but it can get out of sync).

To play the normal game again: MODS > ORIGINAL GAME.

Nothing of the mod is in this download. It only reads the mod files you put in mods/BEC_1.2.

NotBlood Chosen 1.2

NotBlood Chosen is NotBlood (the Blood source port) with computer players (bots), new match types, co-op saves, internet play without port forwarding, a live game dashboard, a MODS menu and a LAN game finder. It runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iPad/iPhone, and all of them play together.

You need your own Blood files (One Unit Whole Blood: CD, GOG or Steam). The game files are not included.

Downloads

File For
NotBlood-Chosen-1.2-win64.zip Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
NotBlood-Chosen-1.2-linux-x64.zip Linux on PCs (x86_64): any distribution from about 2022 on (Ubuntu 22.04, Mint 21, Debian 12, Fedora 36, Arch, SteamOS or newer), nothing to install
NotBlood-Chosen-1.2-linux-arm64.zip Linux on ARM (arm64/aarch64): Raspberry Pi 4/5 with a 64-bit system, ARM laptops and handhelds, same distributions
NotBlood-Chosen-1.2-macos.zip macOS 11 or newer, Apple Silicon and Intel
NotBlood-Chosen-1.2-android.apk Android 5 or newer (phones, tablets, Chromebooks)
NotBlood-Chosen-1.2-ios.ipa iPad/iPhone with iOS 15 or newer (unsigned: sideload it with Signulous, Sideloadly or AltStore)
NotBlood-Chosen-1.2-web.zip the web version; every NotBlood server installs it by itself and serves it at /play/ (SERVER.md)

No install at all: if you or a friend runs a NotBlood server, open its address followed by /play/ in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Pick your Blood files once, add it to the home screen and it works offline, with everything below except LAN games (more).

The iPad/iPhone IPA is the same build that's in NotBlood-iOS, which has iOS install notes.

Everybody in a network game needs 1.2. Older versions can't join a 1.2 game, and 1.2 can't join theirs.

Setup

Windows / Linux

  1. Unzip into a folder of its own, for example NotBlood.
  2. Copy your Blood files next to the game: BLOOD.INI, BLOOD.RFF, GUI.RFF, SOUNDS.RFF, SURFACE.DAT, TABLES.DAT, VOXEL.DAT and TILES000.ART to TILES017.ART.
  3. Start notblood.exe (Windows) or ./notblood (Linux; nothing else to install, it works under X11 and Wayland).

macOS

  1. Unzip and put the NotBlood folder anywhere in your home folder, for example in Documents. You don't need an administrator.
  2. Copy your Blood files into the folder, next to NotBlood.app.
  3. The app isn't signed by Apple, so macOS blocks it the first time. Open Terminal and type xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine with a space at the end. Drag the NotBlood folder onto the Terminal window and press Return.
  4. Double-click NotBlood.app.

Android

  1. Install the APK and start it once. Allow it "access to all files".
  2. Copy your Blood files into the NotBlood folder of the main storage (next to Download) and start the game again.
  3. 1.2 installs over NotBlood Chosen 1.0 and over the bots test builds, and keeps your files and settings.

iPad / iPhone

  1. Sign and install the IPA with Signulous, Sideloadly or AltStore, and start it once.
  2. Copy your Blood files to Files > On My iPad > NotBlood.

Optional extras (all platforms, in the game folder)

  • movie/: the cutscenes from the Blood CD's MOVIE folder.
  • addons/: add-on episodes, one folder each (for example Cryptic Passage in addons/cryptic).
  • mods/: mods as folders, .zip, .grp or .pk3 files. Pick them in the main menu under MODS.
  • CD music: save the CD audio tracks as blood02.ogg, blood03.ogg, and so on, then turn on OPTIONS > SOUND > REDBOOK AUDIO.

What NotBlood Chosen adds to NotBlood

Bots (new in 1.2)

  • Computer players that play like people. They hide, jump, chase, flee, ambush you at doorways, flank, take the high ground, ride lifts and open doors. They only know what a player could know: what they see and hear, and where they last saw you.
  • 4 difficulties (easy, normal, hard, nightmare) and 6 personalities (balanced, rusher, camper, trickster, coward, jumper), or a mix of them.
  • FINE TUNING for all bots: aim, reaction time, aggression, jumping, ambushes, flanking, camping, high ground, taunts, the cultist look, and how much damage they take. GRUDGES and ADAPTIVE DIFFICULTY are optional.
  • SET EACH BOT (new in 1.2): give each bot its own name, difficulty, personality, team, damage and fine tuning.
  • Offline: MULTIPLAYER > PLAY WITH BOTS, plus a 10-match CAREER and WATCH BOTS (only bots play while you watch).
  • In LAN and online games (new in 1.2): the host adds bots in the MULTIPLAYER setup under BOTS. The host's computer plays them, so everybody sees the same bots.
  • BOT ORDERS (ESC): follow me, hold this spot, go ahead. These are for the bots on your side in co-op and teams.

Match types and mutators

  • Bloodbath: normal, gun game, king of the hill, juggernaut, last man standing.
  • Teams (new in 1.2: all four modes): team bloodbath, capture the flag, king of the hill, last team standing.
  • Co-op: normal, survival (waves of monsters).
  • SET TEAMS (new in 1.2): put every player and bot on AUTO, BLUE or RED. Uneven teams are allowed.
  • Mutators: low or moon gravity, vampire, one-hit kills, random or single weapon.
  • MATCH STATS: frags, deaths, aim, best streak, favourite weapon, nemesis.

Co-op saves

  • 8 slots, saved on every player's machine.
  • Load where you saved (positions, keys, enemies) or restart the level with your gear.
  • Players get their saves by name. New players start with the pitchfork. When somebody leaves, the game saves itself.

Online and LAN

  • Online lobbies through your own relay server (how to run it: SERVER.md). They are protected by a key and need no port forwarding. There is no default server: enter your own server's address and key.
  • A live dashboard in the browser: lobbies, players' health, armor, weapons and keys, a live level map and an event list.
  • FIND LAN GAMES. The host screen shows your address, and you get clear messages when versions or mods differ.

Everything else

  • MODS menu for add-on episodes and mods. A mod that breaks the start is switched off again.
  • Cutscenes from the CD's movie folder in any upper or lower case.
  • Touch controls, gyro aiming and render scale on Android and iPad. The touch buttons hide while a controller is connected.
  • A macOS app (Apple Silicon and Intel) that needs no administrator. Android keeps everything in the NotBlood folder.
  • Settings are saved whenever a menu closes. On Android there is a crash report in notblood.log.

New in 1.2 compared to 1.0

  • Bots, the match types, mutators and match stats (all of these were only in the bots test builds before).
  • Bots in LAN and online games, SET EACH BOT and SET TEAMS.
  • Team bloodbath without flags, and last team standing.
  • MODE now sits right under GAME in GAME SETTINGS.
  • No default online server.
  • Android: the black sky, explosions turning the world black, settings not being kept and slow drawing are fixed.
  • macOS: faster drawing on Apple GPUs.

Quick start

You against bots: MULTIPLAYER > PLAY WITH BOTS. Set BOTS, DIFFICULTY and PERSONALITY, then START MATCH. Change the map, mode and limits in MATCH SETTINGS.

2 players on a LAN plus 2 bots

  1. Player 1: MULTIPLAYER > HOST A GAME.
  2. In the setup, set BOTS (under GAME) to 2.
  3. Player 2: MULTIPLAYER > FIND LAN GAMES and join.
  4. Player 1: once player 2 has joined, START GAME.

Teams: GAME SETTINGS > GAME: TEAMS. Pick the MODE, then use SET TEAMS to choose who plays on which side.

Online: set up your own server once (SERVER.md: Docker on a Raspberry Pi, a home PC or a VPS). Then MULTIPLAYER > ONLINE: enter the server address and key, then HOST A LOBBY or FIND LOBBIES. Bots work the same way as on a LAN.

Game modes

Mode What it is
Bloodbath: normal Everyone for themselves, most frags wins
Bloodbath: gun game Every kill gives you the next of 10 weapons. A pitchfork kill with the last one wins
Bloodbath: king of the hill Score while you're alone in the flag-marked area. It moves every 90 seconds
Bloodbath: juggernaut Kill the juggernaut to become it (200 health, armor, double guns)
Bloodbath: last man standing Limited lives, and the last one alive wins
Teams: team bloodbath Blue against red, frags only
Teams: capture the flag Bring the enemy flag to your base
Teams: king of the hill Your team scores while only your side holds the hill
Teams: last team standing Limited lives, and the last team with someone left wins
Co-op: normal The episodes together, against the monsters
Co-op: survival Growing waves of monsters, shared lives, your best wave is kept; WAVES from VERY EASY to HARD

Every mode works with only people, only bots, or both. The README in the download explains every menu in more detail, and README - Bots.txt covers the bots.

Known issues

  • Blood's demo files close the game: if the game folder has Blood's demo files (*.DEM, the gameplay behind the main menu), the game closes when a match with bots starts (seen on Windows). Remove the .DEM files from the game folder or start the game with -nodemo.
  • Co-op saves: they are off in games with bots.
  • Broadcast games: bots can't be added to games started with -broadcast.
  • Platform testing: Linux and Windows are tested most. Cross-platform games and the iPad build are less tested, so please report problems with notblood.log from the game folder.
