What's new

• Linux kernel 6.18.58 LTS (was 6.16.1), new drivers for webcams, I2C touchpads, Intel SOF audio, Intel XE graphics, IGC Ethernet, ATH12K Wi-Fi, USB4, SD readers, NVMe
• ISO down to about 1.4 GB (was 2.1 GB): the compiler is now an optional download from the Store ("Development tools")
• About 460 MB of RAM at idle in the live session on real hardware
• Desktop widgets of your choice: small clock, calendar, weather, system monitor, battery and network, quick links, notes (none on by default)
• One unified top-bar tray: volume, brightness, battery, Bluetooth
• Own cursor theme and own system icons (shutdown, logout, lock, battery), Italian clock, 26 wallpapers, animated boot splash
• "Safe graphics" boot entry now working; Fn volume keys work; battery icon opens power settings
• Update Maginat: updates Flatpak apps, checks GitHub for newer releases and installs signed system updates (kernel and packages) on installed systems
• Bigger Store, adds Flathub by itself
• New Blackjack and Poker with animations and automatic next hand
• mtPaint, driverless printing and scanning

Known limits

• No Secure Boot (disable it in firmware to boot the ISO)
• System updates only cover what is published in the update channel (kernel and packages, installed systems only, no dependency handling); a new Maginat version still means downloading the new ISO
• Some Flatpak icons may look generic (no SVG icon support yet); tray icons do not use StatusNotifier yet
• No proprietary printer drivers (e.g. HPLIP): IPP printers and driverless scanning work
• X11 only, no Wayland

Limiti noti

• Niente Secure Boot (disattivarlo nel BIOS/UEFI per avviare la ISO)
• Gli aggiornamenti di sistema riguardano solo ciò che viene pubblicato nel canale aggiornamenti (kernel e pacchetti, solo su sistema installato, senza gestione delle dipendenze); per una nuova versione di Maginat si scarica la nuova ISO
• Alcune icone Flatpak possono apparire generiche (manca il supporto alle icone SVG); le icone della barra non usano ancora lo standard StatusNotifier
• Niente driver stampante proprietari (per esempio HPLIP): funzionano le stampanti con IPP e le scansioni senza driver
• Solo X11, senza Wayland

• Log out in the live session may leave the screen black until a key is pressed
• Volume keys (Fn) do not change the volume; use the tray icon
• The battery icon is an indicator only
• No proprietary printer drivers (HPLIP), no driverless USB printing (ipp-usb) or network scanning (airscan)
• Experimental: try it in a virtual machine or from the live USB first

Maginat 0.1 (preview) - Release notes

First public preview of Maginat, an independent Linux distribution built from scratch
(Linux From Scratch 12.4, SysV init) with the Xfce desktop.

Highlights

• Live session and graphical installer, bootable in BIOS and UEFI mode (hybrid ISO, about 1.7 GB)
• Optional persistence on the USB stick (sudo maginat-persistenza, then the "with persistence" boot entry)
• NetworkManager with tray applet; VPN support through WireGuard and OpenVPN
• Bluetooth with tray icon; PulseAudio sound (Bluetooth A2DP); battery indicator and power management
• English and Italian: choose the language in the first boot menu
• Flatpak (Flathub preconfigured) and AppImage support
• Included apps: LibreOffice, Thunderbird, Mullvad Browser, Tutanota Desktop

Live session

• User: utente, password: maginat, sudo without password (live session only).
• Default boot entry runs in RAM; use the "with persistence" entry after creating the persistence partition.

Installer

• Erases the entire selected disk.
• Installed system uses the user name and password you choose; live credentials are removed.

Known limitations

• Secure Boot is not supported.
• Bluetooth audio uses A2DP only; headset profiles (HSP/HFP) are not supported yet.
• Live session in RAM unless persistence is set up; large Flatpak runtimes may not fit.
• Tested in virtual machines (QEMU) and on one real laptop (Dell Vostro 15-3568); other hardware may behave differently.
• x86-64-v2 or newer CPU required.

• Graphical software store and an update command
• Bluetooth headset profiles (HSP/HFP)
