Zeus 0.0.1a is the first pre-alpha release of Zeus, a local download and file manager that AI assistants can use and that asks you before it uses a login. It contains the Zeus client for the desktop, the zeus command line, the zeusd daemon and its bridges, for Windows x64 and Linux x64. It is for trying out: expect rough edges, and do not rely on it for important files yet.

The Zeus client on the hosted pre-alpha: six downloads from the sample file hosts, finished and hashed, with the executable quarantined

Try it in the browser

The Zeus client on a real zeusd in a private sandbox for your browser. It downloads only from sample file hosts on that server, never from the internet, and the sandbox is deleted after 24 hours (40 files, 1 GiB).

Install

Windows 10 or 11 (x64)

  1. Download the installer, or the portable zip and unzip it.
  2. Run it. The binaries are unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC": choose More info, then Run anyway. Some antivirus tools also warn about unsigned programs. Check the SHA-256 first (see below).

Linux (x64) with WebKitGTK 4.1 (Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, Debian 12 or newer)

  • AppImage: chmod +x Zeus_0.0.1-alpha_amd64.AppImage, then run it.
  • Debian or Ubuntu: sudo apt install ./Zeus_0.0.1-alpha_amd64.deb

The client connects to the hosted pre-alpha by default. Settings, Backend switches it to your own zeusd (through zeus-web-bridge on 127.0.0.1) or to offline sample data.

Use your own zeusd with the client

Unpack the command-line archive, then:

zeus daemon install # once: creates the state folder and credentials, including gui.token
zeusd run # keep it running
zeus-web-bridge # prints http://127.0.0.1:18545 and the path of bridge.token

In the client: Settings, Backend, "My own zeusd", Switch and reload, and paste the token.

What is in it

  • Zeus client (apps/client, Tauri 2): downloads with categories and a properties panel, link grabber with a two-step review, site grabber, queues, scheduler and speed limiter, Everything-style file search, agent threads on Zeus's 13 MCP tools, approvals, connectors, skills and extensive settings, in light and dark themes.
  • zeus, zeusd, zeus-native-host: the daemon, the command line and terminal view (including zeus mcp) and the browser native-messaging host, built from this tag.
  • zeus-web-bridge: the HTTP bridge between the client and zeusd (zeusd keeps one listener, its local IPC socket). It uses zeusd's restricted gui credential: seven permissions, no approval decisions, no file writes. Locally it listens on 127.0.0.1:18545 and requires the token from its owner-only bridge.token file.
  • Real-daemon client (apps/desktop, zeus-desktop): the strict, minimal client that talks to a local zeusd directly with the same gui credential: redacted download pages, link review, workflow reports, default-root files and artifact facts. It does not decide approvals.

What works

  • Real downloads in zeusd: resume, retries, SHA-256 and BLAKE3 verification, quarantine of executables, pause, resume, retry and cancel, link review with a dry run, files and integrity facts.
  • In the hosted pre-alpha, every screen and setting persists for the sandbox: queues and schedules, settings, link-grabber lists, site-grabber plans (a real walk over a sample site, then an approval), the search index of your sandbox's files, agent threads, skills and connectors.
  • Approvals held by zeusd are listed and decided only on zeusd's trust surfaces (the interactive CLI, the extension popup). Plans and file moves proposed in the client are held by the pre-alpha service and decided in the page, labelled as such.

Planned (not yet, or prepared)

  • zeusd does not schedule queues or limit speed yet: queues run in the client while it is open, and the limiter's settings are stored but not applied.
  • The agent's replies are prepared; no model is called. Connector statuses come from the implementation ledger; no account is contacted.
  • Renaming, moving and deleting files is not offered by the client (its credential has no file write permission).
  • The browser extension is not part of this release; files behind a login need it.
  • Signed installers, auto-update and a macOS build.

Known issues

  • Windows SmartScreen and some antivirus tools warn about unsigned programs.
  • zeus, zeusd and zeus-native-host report version 0.1.0: the daemon workspace keeps its internal crate version because signed provider-policy manifests require min_zeus_version 0.1.0. The client, the desktop shell, zeus-web-bridge and zeus-desktop are 0.0.1-alpha.
  • The Linux client needs WebKitGTK 4.1 (Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, Debian 12 or newer).
  • Device acceptance on many machines, screen readers and 200% zoom is still to do.

Windows assets were built natively (MSVC); Linux assets in a Debian bookworm container (glibc 2.36). The manual workflow .github/workflows/release-prealpha.yml reproduces them.
