Arn v0.4.0

@Aryann-Sharma Aryann-Sharma released this 26 Sep 17:38

Changes

  • Larger, more distinct logos in the header and replies, with a compact robot icon that stands out in the taskbar.
  • Edit task descriptions with edit NUMBER DESCRIPTION while preserving task type, dates, completion, and position.
  • Reschedule deadlines with /by, or update either or both event endpoints with /from and /to.
  • For events, omitted endpoints stay unchanged. A supplied date without a time retains that endpoint's existing time; an explicit time replaces it. The complete resulting range is shown and validated before saving. Deadline /by still replaces the entire due date and time.
  • Undo up to 100 saved changes in the current session. History clears on restart; there is no redo.
  • Keep new responses and wrapped errors visible after layout, without changing the reading position when resizing older messages.
  • Updated user documentation, desktop examples, and interface screenshot.

Download and run

Download Arn.jar and run java -jar Arn.jar from the directory where you keep your task data. Use java -jar Arn.jar --cli for the console interface.

Requires Java 17 on x64 Windows, Linux, or Intel macOS. JavaFX is bundled; native ARM libraries are not included. Tasks remain in data/arn.txt relative to your launch directory. Undo history is session-only.

Arn.jar.sha256 contains the SHA-256 checksum for the download.

Verification

The release commit passes all 125 tests, including packaged console and JavaFX desktop checks. CI validates Windows, Linux, and Intel macOS. The attached JAR comes from the tested version-tag workflow.

What's changed

  • Clearer command errors explain missing spaces, missing arguments, repeated date markers, and markers in the wrong order. Messages include examples where useful.
  • Date errors distinguish formatting mistakes from dates that do not exist and invalid times, and identify the affected deadline or event field.
  • Task-number errors show the available range. Storage errors identify the save file, explain the problem, and give recovery steps.
  • In the desktop app, bye shows a farewell for three seconds and then closes the window. Input and quick actions are disabled during the pause. Console bye still exits immediately.
  • Updated documentation and added regression tests for error messages and desktop shutdown.

Download and run

Download Arn.jar and run:

java -jar Arn.jar

Requires Java 17 for x64 Windows, Linux, or Intel macOS. JavaFX is bundled. Native ARM libraries are not included.

Use java -jar Arn.jar --cli for console mode or java -jar Arn.jar --version to check the version. Tasks are stored in data/arn.txt relative to the launch directory; back up that file before upgrading.

The release passes 100 tests on Windows, Linux, and Intel macOS, including packaged console and desktop checks. Arn.jar.sha256 contains the download's SHA-256 checksum.

v0.3.0

What's changed

  • Reject impossible dates and invalid times, and keep search/sort task numbers consistent with update commands.
  • Preserve saved data when records are malformed, a save fails, or another session changes the file.
  • Write only when tasks change, with temporary-file replacement and coordination between writers.
  • Preserve unfinished commands during quick actions and failed commands for correction; improve keyboard focus and resizing behavior.
  • Add console mode, help, and version options to the runnable JAR, with UTF-8 console input/output and clean end-of-input handling.
  • Update Gradle, JavaFX, Shadow, and JUnit; add reproducible packaging, coverage reports, dependency update checks, and CI for Windows, Linux, and Intel macOS.
  • Refresh installation, command, recovery, architecture, testing, and contribution documentation.

Verification

The release is covered by 76 tests, including 2,000 deterministic generated parser inputs, storage failure/concurrency cases, JavaFX interaction tests, and separate-process checks of the packaged application. The desktop is checked at normal and minimum window sizes. Unit and JavaFX coverage is 86.6% of lines and 84.5% of branches; packaged process tests are reported separately.

Download and run

Download Arn.jar and run:

java -jar Arn.jar

Requires a 64-bit Java 17 runtime on x64 Windows, Linux, or Intel macOS. JavaFX is bundled. Native ARM libraries are not included.

java -jar Arn.jar --cli
java -jar Arn.jar --help
java -jar Arn.jar --version

The SHA-256 checksum is provided in Arn.jar.sha256.

Existing tasks

Launch from the same working directory to keep using data/arn.txt. Legacy and versioned saves are supported. Make a backup before upgrading. If a save is malformed, Arn now stops and reports the problem instead of skipping records. A persistent arn.txt.lock file is normal.
