Backplane 0.13.1

Choose a tag to compare

@i2cjak i2cjak released this 29 Oct 21:16

Backplane 0.13.1 includes the Bend port of TanStack for timeline scrolling (#497), paging/streaming jump fixes (#499), and Markdown rendering without flashing (#500).

Built from upstream main ec7d365d320352d0dad294c722082dda76eb5dc1 with an isolated release-only version/workflow binding at 371f6d307b90c9774b46dad68eeb174839bc1e5f; product src/ bytes are unchanged from that main.

Downloads include Linux x64/arm64, Windows x64 and Apple Silicon Mac desktops, web, classic updater bundles, Debian installers, checksums and source/artifact provenance. One configured build produced all five services and both Linux packages. Windows and Mac required affected packaging-only tooling recoveries using the same compiled bytes; original failures are retained in provenance. Matching-host service startup, ordinary desktop smoke and strict archive checks passed. Packages retain the existing unsigned portable policy; commercial code signing/notarization is not claimed. Intel Mac service is in the configured build artifacts; no ordinary Intel Mac desktop wrapper is defined.

Phone builds follow separately: iOS scroll qualification has not passed, so this release includes no phone artifacts or new TestFlight upload. Existing phone builds are unchanged. Broad regression and known global proof/type baseline failures are not claimed passing.

Backplane 0.13.0

Choose a tag to compare

@i2cjak i2cjak released this 28 Oct 20:16

Backplane 0.13.0 is built from canonical upstream main ac3f2a519a9b282c07d8570bfb5c9b353c7bbdfe. It includes the native history/sidebar compatibility fix and focused durable-store startup corrections for Windows and macOS, merged as #469–#471.

Downloads provide four desktop packages, web, classic updater-compatible bundles, Linux Debian installers, SHA256SUMS and detailed source/artifact provenance. All four desktop targets passed the ordinary native smoke and strict package producer, including compiled startup in ASCII and Unicode homes. Packages follow the existing unsigned-portable policy; commercial signing/notarization is not claimed.

The configured build also produces five service targets. Intel Mac service is available in the configured build artifacts; the repository defines no Intel Mac desktop/classic package.

Checks were limited to relevant source qualification, compiled runtime and packaging/integrity. Broad regression was not rerun, and inherited global proof/type baseline failures remain recorded in provenance. Startup targets and physical-phone/RF behavior are not claimed by these checks.

Mobile distribution is unchanged: no new SDK build, TestFlight upload, audience change or External review. Existing 0.12.2 (202610280300) remains intact; separate scoped compatibility acceptance does not establish physical iPhone validation.

Backplane v0.13.0-nightly.20261028.1

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@jlcjak jlcjak released this 28 Oct 14:33

A nightly of what becomes Backplane 0.13: Linux x64 and Android only.

Android: backplane-v0.13.0-android.apk (and .aab), version 0.13.0 (code 2026102816), built and signed with the release key by the Signed Android workflow; it installs over the published app. It is the phone build for the 0.13 release.

Linux x64: backplane-v0.13.0-nightly.20261028.1-linux-x64-app.tar.gz is the whole app (hub, web client, desktop window, KiStack and helpers) as built on a development machine: unpack it and run desktop/backplane-open (or ./backplane for the hub alone). It is not an updater archive, so installed hubs do not update to it by themselves, and it has no Google sign-in or telemetry credentials baked in (only the release pipeline adds those). As in the 0.12.3 archives, the agents' preview browser and the STEP converter helpers are not included. No macOS or Windows build in this nightly.

What's new since 0.12.3:

  • bug fixes: huge number of bugs fixed across the board
  • Split view: the schematic, the board and its 3D model side by side, each pane put away and back; cross-probing: click a part or a net on any of them and it lights on all three, and stays lit across closing the viewer, switching tabs and reloading.
  • A new top bar (breadcrumb, State cell, command field, Settings gear), the three-column model picker (agent | model | effort), keycaps, Buy in the tool rail, status colours (working blue, done green, attention red), click-away, a project's intent in its right-click menu, "settle when done" as a setting.
  • Keyboard first: the composer keeps the keyboard; Esc puts away the terminal and the viewer; / comes back to the composer; keycaps show while Ctrl is held.
  • 3D: lit from above on a soft spot of light; a board's model kept on the hub (a reload shows it at once) and prepared when its board opens; one model read at a time, and a model too big for the hub's memory refused with a note.
  • Search across every thread, a palette that ranks the best match first, no flash when switching threads, reloading or restarting the hub, steadier scrolling with a "New ↓" pill, Stop keeping its text and stamp, design history that waits for each step to draw, Diff and Review fixes, routines on time, Settings using a wide screen, the sidebar's own fold control, and many smaller fixes; Android fixes (row-menu Fork, the composer's Stop, failed-turn labels).

Known: a large board's first 3D model still takes several seconds to prepare and a few GB of memory while it is read; models over 12 MB are not shown.

Backplane 0.12.3

@i2cjak i2cjak released this 25 Oct 00:15

Backplane 0.12.3 updates desktop, server and web with checkpoint/token-history repairs, connection recovery, renderer corrections and the KiStack pin. It includes the merged fixes from #429–#433.

Downloads include four desktop packages, web, classic updater-compatible archives, Linux installers, SHA256SUMS and source/artifact provenance. Desktop packages follow the existing unsigned-portable policy.

This patch uses the existing focused qualification and brief production packaging/integrity checks. Broad regression, a new full proof campaign and native desktop smoke were not run; the existing full-proof late-import parse blocker remains recorded.

Startup has improved, but the two-second first-useful target remains unmet. The original physical Older crash is unconfirmed. The layout-placement skill remains experimental; no RF or physical-phone validation is claimed.

Mobile distribution is separate: the existing signed/uploaded iOS 0.12.2 build 202610242215 remains unchanged. This release adds no mobile upload, tester or external beta-review action.

Backplane 0.12.2

Choose a tag to compare

@i2cjak i2cjak released this 23 Oct 04:35

Backplane 0.12.2 fixes retained Mailroom SDK sessions, restores project catalogs and sent images, updates the header logo and connection status, repairs links, and moves telemetry to backplaneworks.com.

Desktop, web, Android, iOS, classic updater archives and Linux installers are included. TestFlight availability is tracked separately from GitHub downloads. Remaining validation was explicitly waived for this expedited release; source and asset provenance are retained.

Backplane v0.12.1

Choose a tag to compare

@i2cjak i2cjak released this 22 Oct 20:03

Backplane 0.12.1 moves the hub to the Bun JavaScript runtime and adds the on-disk store. On first start, existing event logs migrate into the store. This one-time upgrade can take a few minutes for a large history; keep Backplane open while it finishes. Later starts load the current state without replaying the full history into memory. Keep the original event log and normal backups.

This release also fixes missing projects in the sidebar, per-project settled counts, full-length messages and cached message restoration, reconnect behavior, and autocomplete for @, >, %, #, $ and /. Windows includes its private shell runtime and terminal fixes, including large pastes.

Desktop downloads include Electron and the matching hub and web client. Linux x64 and ARM64, Apple Silicon macOS, Windows x64, the standalone web client, Android APK/AAB, and iOS IPA are supplied separately. SHA256SUMS covers the published assets.

Existing 0.12.0 hub installations receive the matching desktop application with the update. Linux users can also use the architecture-specific .deb; portable archives remain available. The macOS portable app is unsigned. Windows is an unsigned portable package; its hub remains resident when the window closes.

Backplane v0.12.0

Choose a tag to compare

@i2cjak i2cjak released this 21 Oct 23:19

Backplane 0.12.0 is the desktop app: an Electron window over the Backplane hub (backplane-serve), on Linux (x64, arm64), macOS (Apple silicon) and Windows (x64). The native Bend window is gone.

Install

  • Linux and macOS: curl -fsSL https://github.com/i2cjak/Backplane/releases/download/v0.12.0/install.sh | sh. This installs the hub, its web client, the backplane command and the desktop app into ~/.local/share/backplane. Set BACKPLANE_NO_DESKTOP_APP=1 for a hub-only install, for example on a server.
  • Debian and Ubuntu: backplane_0.12.0_amd64.deb or _arm64.deb installs into /opt/backplane and sets up the app's sandbox for you.
  • Windows: unzip backplane-v0.12.0-windows-x64.zip and run Backplane.exe.
  • Portable desktop archives: backplane-v0.12.0-<platform>.tar.gz (run backplane-open on Linux, or Backplane.app on macOS).

backplane opens the desktop app when there's a display. backplane --headless runs the hub in the background, as before.

Linux sandbox

The desktop app runs inside Chromium's OS sandbox and never turns it off. That sandbox needs either user namespaces or a root-owned chrome-sandbox. Ubuntu 23.10 and later restrict user namespaces.

  • The .deb sets this up automatically.
  • With install.sh or the tarball, if neither is available, the installer and the app print the one command to run, for example:
    sudo chown root:root ~/.local/share/backplane/desktop/runtime/chrome-sandbox && sudo chmod 4755 ~/.local/share/backplane/desktop/runtime/chrome-sandbox

Updating from 0.11

  • Installs from install.sh update themselves. The updater installs the new hub, its web client and the backplane command. Until you run install.sh once, backplane opens the hub in your browser instead of a window.
  • To get the desktop app, run the install command above once.
  • .deb installs: install the 0.12.0 .deb.

Not in this build

  • Part renders on the Mech tab, and agents' PNG renders. The Mech tab says so; the 3D view still shows parts.
  • The embedded CEF browser.
  • The full text of launch reports cut short by earlier versions.
  • The user-interface fixes that came after this build: Chat as the uberbot's first tab, no Subagents panel for it, no stray extra-text panel, multi-file image upload, and operational reports filed in the Mailroom. These are in 0.12.1.

Phones

The Android and iOS apps in this release were built as 0.12.0 earlier in the cycle, from source 920c5a39. They don't include the user-interface fixes above, which come with 0.12.1.

Build

Built from 7fc9d098, with CI green on that exact tree (type-check, proofs, tests, server builds and smoke). Each desktop archive passed a launch-and-connect check on its own platform, with the OS sandbox on: hosted Linux x64, Linux arm64 and macOS runners, and a Windows VM.
