Therapy Profile Configuration

BlueBuzzah Updater allows you to configure your devices with different therapy profiles to customize the stimulation patterns.

Overview

Therapy profiles control the behavior and stimulation pattern of your BlueBuzzah devices. After installing firmware, you can configure your devices with a specific therapy profile that best suits your needs.

Understanding vCR Therapy

BlueBuzzah uses vibrotactile Coordinated Reset (vCR) therapy, which delivers gentle vibrations to your fingertips in carefully designed sequences. The goal is to provide varied sensory input that may help interrupt repetitive neural patterns.

Each therapy session stimulates your fingertips in randomized sequences. The devices coordinate wirelessly to ensure both hands receive synchronized stimulation according to your selected profile.

Therapy Parameters

Different profiles use different combinations of these parameters:

Pattern Type

  • Mirrored: The same fingers activate together on both hands (e.g., both index fingers, then both middle fingers). This creates bilateral symmetric stimulation.
  • Non-mirrored: Different fingers can activate independently (e.g., left index with right pinky). This treats every fingertip on both hands as a separate stimulation point.

Jitter (Timing Variation)

Jitter adds randomness to the timing between stimulations:

  • 0%: Fixed, consistent timing between each stimulation
  • Above 0% (23.5% in Noisy and Hybrid, 15% in Gentle): Variable timing that prevents predictable patterns

Amplitude

The vibration intensity level. Regular, Noisy and Hybrid use full amplitude. Gentle uses reduced intensity (30–70%), and Custom lets you set the range.

Available Profiles

Profile Pattern Jitter Description
Regular Non-mirrored 0% Standard vCR with consistent timing
Noisy Mirrored 23.5% Research-based protocol with timing variation
Hybrid Non-mirrored 23.5% Independent patterns with timing variation
Gentle Sequential, mirrored 15% Lower intensity for sensitive users
Custom Non-mirrored (default) 23.5% (default) Your own timing, strength and session length

How Profiles Differ

Mirrored vs Non-Mirrored

Mirrored patterns (Noisy and Gentle profiles) activate the same fingers on both hands simultaneously. When your left index finger vibrates, your right index finger vibrates too. This bilateral symmetric approach targets coordination between both sides of the brain.

Non-mirrored patterns (Regular, Hybrid profiles) treat each fingertip independently. Your left index might vibrate while your right pinky does, creating more diverse stimulation patterns across all fingertips.

Why Jitter Matters

Profiles with jitter (Noisy, Hybrid, Gentle) add unpredictability to the timing. Rather than vibrations occurring at perfectly regular intervals, there's natural variation. This prevents your brain from anticipating the next stimulation, which may enhance the therapy's effectiveness.

Research Basis

The Noisy profile's mirrored pattern with 23.5% jitter is based on published vCR research. For more details, see the original research study.

Choosing a Profile

  • Regular - Start here if you're new to BlueBuzzah. Consistent timing makes it easy to know what to expect.
  • Noisy - The research-based protocol. Good for users comfortable with varied stimulation.
  • Hybrid - Combines independent finger patterns with timing variation.
  • Gentle - Lower intensity for users who prefer softer stimulation or are just getting started.
  • Custom - Set your own timing, strength and session length (see below).

Configuration Workflow

Select Configure in the sidebar (⌘2 on macOS, Ctrl+2 on Windows). The Configure Devices page takes you through four parts:

Step 1: Profile Selection

Under Choose a Pattern, select the therapy profile you want to apply to your devices. Each profile displays a description to help you choose. Your choice is remembered the next time you open the app.

If you choose Custom, a Custom Pattern card appears with these settings:

Setting Range Default
Buzz length 50–200 milliseconds 100
Pause between buzzes 30–200 milliseconds 67
Timing variation 0–50% 23.5
Lowest strength 20–100% 70
Highest strength 20–100% 100
Session length 1–240 minutes 120
  • Same order on both devices (off by default) makes both devices buzz the same fingers in the same order (mirrored).
  • Lowest strength can't be higher than highest strength.
  • Load from Device reads the Custom settings from a connected PRIMARY device. The app tries this when the card opens.
  • Reset to Defaults appears once you change a value from its default.

The Device Behavior card has two more switches that are sent with any profile:

  • Turn off the light during sessions - The device's light stays off while it buzzes.
  • Debug output - Sends extra details over USB for troubleshooting.

Step 2: Device Selection

Under Choose Devices, the updater auto-detects connected BlueBuzzah devices (v2 and v3 can be mixed here). Devices in bootloader mode aren't listed, because settings can only be sent to a device that is running its firmware. Select the device(s) you want to configure:

  • Choose one device for single-device setup
  • Choose two devices to configure a PRIMARY/SECONDARY pair together

Roles aren't chosen here; each device keeps the role it was given when its firmware was installed. Give both devices in a pair the same settings so they work properly together. If only one is plugged in, configure the other one the same way next.

Then select Apply to Device (or Apply to Devices).

Step 3: Configuration

The app applies your selected profile to each device in turn:

  • Connecting - Establishes communication with the device
  • Sending settings - Transfers the profile configuration
  • Restarting - Restarts the device to apply changes
  • Finished - Profile successfully applied

Custom settings are written only to the PRIMARY device, which drives both devices during a session.

Warning

Keep the devices plugged in until this finishes. Do not close the application during configuration.

Step 4: Complete

A banner confirms the result, for example "Regular is set on both devices", and each device shows Done, Partly done or Failed. If something didn't finish, use Copy Details or the log (Show Log, Copy Log, Save Log) for troubleshooting. Select Done to start again.

Changing Profiles

You can reconfigure your devices with a different profile at any time:

  1. Launch BlueBuzzah Updater
  2. Select Configure in the sidebar
  3. Choose a new pattern, select your devices and select Apply to Devices

Previous profile settings are replaced when you apply a new profile.
