Koma Stream 1.6.5

The content keeps its distance from the frame.

The gap

The rails at the bottom of the watch page — "The whole series" and "More like this" — were running straight into the edge of the window, so their headings and their cards sat on top of the frame line. Every other page had its gutter; that one had it switched off.

They have it back now. The headings and the cards on the watch page start at the same 48px as the player above them, so the page reads as one column instead of a player that has a gutter and a pair of rails that do not. There is room below the last card as well, instead of it ending against the bottom of the frame.

Banners still bleed to the edge on purpose — a banner that stops short of the window looks like a mistake — but everything with words on it keeps its margin.

Verification

Every page was scanned for text and images sitting within six pixels of the window edge. Browse, the schedule, the library and the stats are clean. What remains on the home page and the watch page are cards scrolled out of the horizontal rails, which is what a rail is supposed to do, and the two deliberate full-bleed banners.

The watch page's rails were measured against the player: the heading, the first card and the player all sit at 48px, and the rails line up with the player exactly. Contrast was audited on every page in both themes, plus the settings panel: 0 low-contrast pairs. 0 console errors.

@Braedennn Braedennn released this 02 Nov 11:19

Koma Stream 1.6.4

A frame around the app, and a settings panel that finally lets you pick your language.

The app frame

The page ran straight into the edges of the window, which made the whole thing read as a screenshot rather than an app. There is now a hairline frame around the viewport, with a soft inner edge, and it follows the theme — light in dark mode, dark in light mode. One pixel, but it is the difference between a window and a picture of one.

Settings

There is a gear in the header now, next to the theme button. It opens a panel with:

  • Preferred audio — Subtitles or English dub.
  • Playback — autoplay the next episode, skip the opening, skip the ending, autoplay when you open an episode.
  • Appearance — light or dark.
  • Data — clear your progress and list. It asks twice, because that is not something to do by accident.

Your language, applied everywhere

Pick English dub and Koma opens every anime in the dub, without you touching anything. When a title has no English dub at all, Koma falls back to the Japanese audio on its own and the dub button in the player greys itself out. The same happens when a single episode has not been dubbed yet, even though the rest of the season has.

The important part: falling back never changes your preference. If you prefer dubs and one title has none, that title plays in the sub and the next one with a dub still plays in the dub. The greyed-out dub button says why: "No English dub available".

Changing the preference while a watch page is open switches that page over too.

Verification

Both cases were checked against the packaged app: a title with a dub opens in the dub with the dub button live, and a title without one opens in the sub with the dub button disabled and greyed to 30% — with the stored preference still reading dub afterwards. The settings panel was audited for contrast in both themes along with every other page: 0 low-contrast pairs. The panel was also checked at phone width — it fits, scrolls, and pushes nothing sideways. 0 console errors.

Koma Stream 1.6.3

@Braedennn Braedennn released this 02 Nov 10:12

Koma Stream 1.6.3

Two fixes: the home hero no longer races through its slides, and the app no longer gets stuck on the page it came from.

The hero stops rushing

The spotlight on the home page was cycling through every anime in a fraction of a second — a new --dur token introduced in the last release had quietly taken over the progress bar's own timing, so the bar filled in 0.22s and the carousel followed it straight round.

The hero now keeps its own timing, separate from the interface's, and dwells on each slide for 8 seconds before moving on. Hovering the hero still pauses it, and the dots and arrows still jump straight to a slide.

The app no longer gets stuck

Clicking through from an anime to the watch page, then to Browse before the watch page had finished loading, could leave the old page sitting on screen with the new one stacked underneath it. Clicking Browse would light up the right icon while the page stayed exactly where it was, and scrolling down would reveal a video player that had no business being there.

The page swap now keeps exactly one page on screen at all times. The new page goes in straight away, so its loading state shows immediately and the app never looks stuck on the page it came from, and the old page lifts away over it as the page turns over. A page that was still building when you moved on is removed along with it, so nothing can be left stranded over the page you are actually looking at.

Verification

Six navigation orderings were replayed against the packaged app — clicking Watch while the anime page was still loading, clicking Browse or Home 60ms into the watch page, clicking Watch twice, and the same clicks with a longer delay. Every one now ends with a single page on screen, matching the address bar. The hero's dwell time was measured at 8 seconds per slide.

Contrast was audited on every page in both themes: 0 low-contrast pairs across home, browse, anime, watch, schedule, library and stats. 0 console errors.

Koma Stream 1.6.2

@Braedennn Braedennn released this 02 Nov 08:13

Koma Stream 1.6.2

A polish release: the header is cleaned up, and the whole app now moves the way the reference design moves.

The header

The app shell was still painting its own dark-navy header over the site, which is why the top of the window looked like a different app than the page underneath it. The header now uses the page's own background and border, so it is one surface with the rest of the design.

  • The Windows minimise / maximise / close buttons now follow the theme. They sit on black in dark mode and on white in light mode, instead of staying navy in both.
  • A hairline rule marks where the window buttons begin, so the header reads as two zones: the site's own header, and the app's caption area.
  • The theme, surprise and account controls are grouped into one tight cluster of 34px circular buttons with even 8px gaps, rather than a loose row of mismatched boxes.
  • The account avatar is cropped toward the top of the portrait and given a soft inner ring, so a character portrait reads as a face instead of a badly framed torso.
  • The header's controls lift on hover and press back when clicked.

Motion

The reference arrives slowly and softly — a long curve, a small lift, and a sequence rather than a single cut. Koma now speaks that language.

  • Page changes crossfade. The old page stays on screen while the next one loads, so you never look at an empty frame, and the two swap over each other instead of cutting.
  • Sections rise into place as they reach the screen. Rows, grids, episode lists, the schedule and the tag clouds now fade up in sequence rather than appearing all at once.
  • Popups — the search suggestions, the shelf menu, the account menu, the filter dropdowns, the player menu and drawers, and the modal dialogs — open on the same soft curve.
  • Cards lift on hover with a slow amber glow, and the artwork eases up in scale behind them.
  • Buttons and icons rise a couple of pixels on hover and press back on click.

Everything collapses to nothing under prefers-reduced-motion, and nothing is ever left stranded invisible if an animation cannot run.

Also in this release

  • The home hero is scaled to the compact mobile proportions so the first rail sits closer to the fold.
  • Two light-mode text tones were darkened so they meet WCAG AA.

Verification

Contrast was audited on every page in both themes: 0 low-contrast pairs across home, browse, anime, watch, schedule, library and stats. The crossfade, the scroll reveals, the header layout and the caption-button theming were all checked against the packaged app itself, not just the dev server. 0 console errors.

Koma Stream 1.6.1

@Braedennn Braedennn released this 02 Nov 00:08

Koma 1.6.1

The home page was showing off the design and hiding the content. The hero took
more than a full screen, so the rails underneath — including Continue
watching
— were always a scroll away.

Fixed: the front page fits on a screen

The hero is now less than two-thirds of its old height, and the first row
starts at the bottom of the screen instead of well past it.

  • Hero artwork panel: 1040px wide → 780px, and cropped shorter (16:5.8)
  • Headline: 88px → 56px, still the biggest thing on the page
  • Description trimmed to two lines, tighter spacing throughout
  • Less gap between the hero and the first row

At a normal 1440×900 window the row heading and the top of the posters are now
on screen without scrolling. On a phone the first row of posters sits well
above the fold too.

Everything else is exactly as it was — the same design, the same palette, the
same dark theme. This just stops it taking up the whole screen.

Still in from 1.6.0

  • The Sage palette, measured from the reference site itself: pure black page,
near-white type, amber/blue/red accents used only as glow
  • Dark is the default theme, with a switch in the header for light
  • Browse → Language → Dubbed only shows titles that actually have an
    English dub
  • The watch page lists the show's other seasons in order, current one marked
  • Every page checked for readable contrast in both themes

Notes

  • The update installs itself as usual — Koma will offer the new version on its
    next start.

Koma Stream 1.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@Braedennn Braedennn released this 01 Nov 23:39

Koma 1.6.0

The Sage redesign, corrected. v1.5.9 got the layout right but the colours wrong,
so this release replaces the palette with the reference site's own tokens and
makes dark the default theme.

Fixed: the colours now actually match the reference

v1.5.9 shipped a white page with a violet accent. The site this design comes
from does not look like that — it ships dark: a pure black page, near-white
type, neutral greys, and three accent hues (amber, blue, red) used only as
glow. Koma now uses that palette exactly, taken from the reference's own
stylesheet rather than eyeballed:

  • Page background #000000 — pure black, like the reference
  • Text #f8f8f8, muted text #9e9e9e, hairline borders at 10% white
  • Fields and buttons bordered in #3a3a3a, the reference's --border
  • Primary buttons white on near-black, exactly as the reference does it
  • Accent hues #fdb770 / #6fa5cb / #dd003f, reserved for the hero's glow

The violet accent is gone. Interactive highlights are monochrome white, so
focus rings, selected tabs and progress bars read as one system instead of a
second brand colour fighting the artwork.

Every page was then checked for readable contrast in both themes, and the
muted greys, the score colour and the dub/sub badges were adjusted so nothing
is left sitting on a background it disappears into.

Fixed: dark is the main theme

The page now opens dark. A switch in the header still flips it to light,
and your choice is remembered from then on. The theme is set before the first
paint, so there is no flash of the wrong colours while it loads.

The interface, rebuilt

The whole site now wears the reference's clean design: a centred hero with a
huge gradient headline and the artwork in a glowing rounded panel that fades
into the page, plain section headings, flat cards and hairline separators.

  • One font (Inter), a larger, more confident type scale
  • Buttons, dropdowns and cards rebuilt to the reference's measurements
  • Title page, watch page, schedule, library and stats pages all restyled
  • The watch page lists the show's other seasons in order, current one marked

Still in from v1.5.9

  • Browse → Language → Dubbed only shows titles that actually have an
English dub, checked against a daily index of the catalogue
  • The other seasons of a show are listed under the player, in watch order

Notes

  • Your library, progress and settings are untouched; this is a look and a
behaviour change, not a data change.
  • The update installs itself as usual — Koma will offer the new version on its
    next start.

Koma Stream 1.5.9

@Braedennn Braedennn released this 01 Nov 19:50

Koma 1.5.9

A new look for Koma, plus the two fixes that were waiting on it.

The interface, rebuilt

The whole site now wears a clean, light design — hairline borders, quiet type,
lots of air, and one accent colour used sparingly. It is modelled on the
Startup Template Sage layout: a
centred hero with a big headline and a rounded picture underneath, plain
section headings, and cards that stay out of the way.

  • Light and dark. A switch sits in the header next to the search box. The
site follows your system's setting the first time you open it, then remembers
whichever one you pick. The page never flashes the wrong colours while it
    loads.
  • A new home hero. The spotlight is now a centred headline with the show's
details underneath and the artwork in a big rounded frame, instead of a
full-bleed background. The carousel still rotates; the controls are quieter.
  • Calmer pages throughout. The title page, watch page, schedule, library and
stats pages were all restyled: underlined tabs, flat pills, soft cards and
hairline separators instead of glows and glass.
  • One font (Inter), a smaller type scale and tighter headings.

Fixed: the "Dubbed" filter

Browse → Language → Dubbed used to show everything, including shows with no
English dub at all. Koma now keeps a daily index of every title in your
streaming catalogue that actually has a dub, and the filter only shows those
(Japanese subtitles are still fine — a dubbed title is welcome either way).
Titles with no dub — Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii, Banana Fish and the rest —
no longer sneak in.

New: the other seasons on the watch page

Under the player, the watch page now lists the whole series in order — every
prequel and sequel season, with the one you are watching marked "you are here".
The next season is one click away instead of a search.

Notes

  • Your library, progress and settings are untouched; this is a look and a
behaviour change, not a data change.
  • The update installs itself as usual — Koma will offer the new version on its
    next start.

Koma Stream 1.5.8

Koma now updates itself while it is open

  • A release that drops while you are using Koma gets picked up in minutes. The app used to look for a new release once at launch and then not again for six hours, so an update that landed mid-session sat there until you restarted it. It checks every ten minutes now, and again whenever the window comes back to the front. (It also stopped asking GitHub through a ten-minute cache that could hide a brand-new release.)
  • The app installs it by itself. Once the installer is downloaded, Koma runs it silently over the running app and then starts the new build. You do not have to quit, reinstall and reopen anything — the app closes for a moment and comes straight back on the new version.
  • It waits for the right moment. If a video is playing, the update waits for the episode to finish rather than closing over it. The card says what is happening while it waits.
  • "Not now" means not now. The button used to say "Later" and did nothing except close the card. It now actually stops the install, and it stays stopped for six hours — including across restarts — so Koma does not install something you just said no to the moment you open it again. The card is still there when you want it, and the footer's "Get the update" brings it straight back.
  • The card comes back. It used to disappear for good the moment you navigated to another page. It is there again now.
  • The installer knows it was automatic. It starts Koma again when it is done, so the app comes back on its own instead of waiting for you to find the icon.

A note on how the update reaches you: the installer has to close Koma before it can replace the files Koma is running from. When Koma starts the installer itself, the installer now waits for Koma to close instead of killing it — killing the tree would have taken the installer down with it, and the update would have died halfway. A manual install still stops a running Koma (and its servers) for you, as before.

Everything from 1.5.7 is unchanged: the library has a "Plan to watch" shelf, the stats page no longer talks over itself, the buttons are small and calm, and nothing gets highlighted.

@Braedennn Braedennn released this 31 Oct 03:31

Koma Stream 1.5.7

"Plan to watch" is now a shelf

  • A new shelf on the + menu — tap the + on any poster and you now get Plan to watch alongside My list, Continue watching, Watched, On hold and Dropped. It has its own calendar icon and it is the first shelf in the list, because it is the one you reach for most.
  • A Plan to watch tab in your Library — with its own count, its own empty state ("Nothing planned"), and each card labelled Plan to watch. The filter tabs wrap cleanly down to a 420px phone.
  • Planned shows leave Continue watching — putting a show on Plan to watch takes it out of the Continue watching rail on the home page and clears its resume point, so it is genuinely waiting for you rather than half-watched. Your watched episodes are never touched.
  • It behaves like the other shelves — one shelf per show, clicking the same shelf again takes the show off it, and the menu shows a tick on whichever shelf it is sitting on. My list and a shelf can both be set at once.
  • The menu stays on screen — with one more row it is taller, so it now caps its height and scrolls instead of running off a short window.

Everything from 1.5.6 is unchanged: nothing gets highlighted, the stats page no longer talks over itself, the buttons are small and calm, and the library has shelves.

Koma Stream 1.5.6

Nothing gets highlighted any more

  • No more blue smears — dragging across the page used to paint a selection over everything: titles, episode names, the stats, all of it. Koma now behaves like an app rather than a document, so a drag across the screen selects nothing.
  • Your fields still work — the search box, the tag input and your own notes are still fully selectable and editable, so you can still edit and copy what you typed.
  • Cleaner by default — no accidental selection while clicking through rows, scrubbing the player, or dragging the mouse across a poster.

Everything from 1.5.5 is unchanged: the stats page no longer talks over itself, the buttons are small and calm, and the library has shelves.
