@Buyukcaglar Buyukcaglar released this 25 Oct 18:56

Version 1.0 of Test Drive II: The Duel for Windows, built on Kylofon's SDL3 port (v0.1.0).

The original game is not included. You need your own copy of the DOS Test Drive II. The base game is enough; the expansions and the Amiga version are optional.

Downloads

  • TD2.exe: the game, one portable exe of about 4 MB. Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. No DLLs or installer needed.
  • TD2-v1.0-win64.zip: the same exe with a short readme and the licence texts (the MIT licence, SDL 3, libarchive, zlib, xz, and the Topaz font).

Getting started

  1. Put TD2.exe in a folder you can write to.
  2. Start it, and choose your DOS game's folder or archive (zip, 7z, rar or lha) when it asks. Or put the game files in a folder named Game next to the exe.
  3. Ctrl+Shift+G switches the graphics mode. A right click or Ctrl+Shift+M opens the menu.

The exe is not code-signed. If Windows SmartScreen warns you, choose More info, then Run anyway.

What's in it

Graphics, switchable at any moment with Ctrl+Shift+G, also mid-race

  • EGA, as in Kylofon's port.
  • CGA: TD2CGA's four-colour graphics with its dither patterns.
  • Hercules: the 640 × 348 monochrome mode, with a white, green or amber monitor.
  • Amiga: the Amiga version's screens from its own files, in 32 colours. This covers the intro, the menus, the car and scenery choice, the high scores, the results, the gas station, game over and the name entry. In the race you get the Amiga cockpit, road and sprites. The Amiga wipes, dissolves and fades are there, and the text is in Topaz.

Sound, switchable with Ctrl+Shift+S

  • A new PC speaker model: band-limited, with a speaker-cone filter.
  • The Amiga music and sound effects: the Amiga player translated to C and played through a Paula emulation in stereo. You also get the Amiga engine, turbo, skid, crash and siren sounds, and the intro speech.

Content

  • The Amiga-only Northern Germany Challenge scenery, rebuilt for every graphics mode. It needs the Amiga game files and the DOS California and European Challenges.
  • Expansions are added from the menu's Game files…. The car and scenery lists of every folder or archive are merged.

App

  • One portable exe, with settings and high scores in a Profile folder next to it. The game folder is never written to.
  • Game archives are read directly, Amiga LhA included.
  • The context menu and the dialogs follow the Windows dark or light theme. The game pauses while the menu is open.
  • An About box with the repository link and the MIT licence, in the same look as the menu.
  • Window sizes from 1× to 4×, and full screen with Alt+Enter. The picture keeps the 4:3 shape with even pixel rows.

Licence

  • The project is now MIT-licensed (LICENSE).

Accuracy

  • Two quirks of the original are reproduced: a billboard sometimes only bumps the car, and the gears can grind in neutral. Three robustness fixes are in: the 20-bit address wrap, a division guard and checks in the executable unpacker.
  • 59 functions are checked against the original executable under emulation. Snapshot tests replay the attract mode, the menus and a full race in every DOS graphics mode.

Known limitations

  • Windows only; a macOS build is planned.
  • Play-tested by the maintainer: the Master scenery in EGA and in the Amiga form. CGA, Hercules, California and Europe have been checked in scripted runs, but nobody has played them yet.
  • Tandy 16-colour graphics (TD2TDY) are not supported.

Notes

The code, tools and documentation were written largely by AI coding assistants (Anthropic's Claude), directed and play-tested by the maintainer.
