- Controls: rebind keys with press-to-assign.
- Controller: gamepad support with a mapping wizard and deadzone.
- Audio: volume and mute.

Mods
- One load order for everything: characters, karts, tracks, music, textures and gameplay mods. Turn them on or off and drag to reorder (lower wins). Overlap warnings show which mod wins each file.
- Install: drop a mod zip onto the launcher, or click Install with MKDSrust on mkdsrust.com.
- Make your own: Create mod unpacks your own game files into a project folder. Edit them with any DS tool, then Test in game or Pack. Pack turns your changes into small patches, so the mod never contains Nintendo files and is ready to upload. Guide: https://docs.mkdsrust.com
Launcher
- No console window behind the game. Turn on Verbose in Settings for it; logs are always saved in the game's
logsfolder. - The Mods page links to mkdsrust.com.
Download MKDSrust-windows-x64.zip, extract it, open MKDSrust.exe and press Build. Your toolchain and settings are reused.
No ROM, Nintendo assets or game code included. GPL-3.0-or-later. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
MKDSrust v0.1.2
- Readable build folders: builds now go into a folder you can find. Picking a folder that already holds other files (like your Desktop) creates an
MKDSrustsubfolder there. Earlier builds are kept asMKDSrust (2),MKDSrust (3), and so on, instead of odd numbered names. - Generated source next to the game: each build includes a
sourcefolder with the Rust code generated from your ROM.
Download MKDSrust-windows-x64.zip, extract it, and open MKDSrust.exe. Your toolchain and settings are reused.
Never share the generated source folder or the built game: they contain translated Nintendo code. The zip contains no ROM, Nintendo assets or game code. GPL-3.0-or-later. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
MKDSrust v0.1.1
Fixes the first build failing with couldn't read ... assets/branding/icon.png: the launcher now includes the window icon in the source it unpacks.
Download MKDSrust-windows-x64.zip, extract it, and open MKDSrust.exe. If you already ran Setup with v0.1.0, just press Build again in the new launcher. Your toolchain and settings are reused.
The zip contains no ROM, Nintendo assets or game code. GPL-3.0-or-later. Not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
MKDSrust v0.1.0
First release of the MKDSrust launcher for Windows 10/11 x64.
How to use
- Download
MKDSrust-windows-x64.zip, extract it, and openMKDSrust.exe. - Follow Setup: choose your own clean Mario Kart DS dump (USA, AMCE rev 0).
- The launcher downloads a private, portable Rust toolchain and builds the game on your PC. No Visual Studio or Rust install is needed.
The first build needs internet access, several GB of free space, and some time to compile.
What's in the zip: the launcher, the license, and a readme. No ROM, Nintendo assets, or game code. The game is generated only on your computer, from your own ROM. Don't share generated games, source, or assets.
GPL-3.0-or-later. Independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
