Issue store-1208 — the admin Settings page's in-page left rail packed five tabs (General, Appearance, Shipping options, Emails, Languages) into one screen, but Appearance is the most-edited surface and burying it behind a sub-tab made it slower to reach than its peers in Catalog or People. v8.2.0 promotes Appearance out of the Settings sub-rail and into the main admin sidebar as a child of a new Settings group — same pattern Catalog/People/Plugins already use. The remaining four tabs (General, Shipping options, Emails, Languages) keep the in-page rail unchanged.

The URL reverts to top-level /admin/appearance (where it lived pre-v7.1.0). The v7.1.0-introduced /admin/settings/appearance keeps redirecting for one release so existing bookmarks don't 404.

No consumer action required

Drop-in upgrade. Reinstalling the new tag promotes Appearance to the sidebar automatically. Old /admin/settings/appearance URLs redirect for one release. No new exports, no removed exports, no provider-prop changes. Sites that pass a custom navItems prop to <AdminShell> keep their custom nav untouched.

Changed

  • src/admin/admin-shell.tsx — the Settings entry in DEFAULT_ADMIN_NAV is now an AdminNavGroup (id: 'settings', href: '/admin/settings') with a single Appearance child at /admin/appearance. SETTINGS_SUB_NAV no longer includes the Appearance row; the in-page Settings rail now shows General / Shipping options / Emails / Languages.
  • src/admin/admin-settings-shell.tsx — the 'appearance' slug is removed from SettingsSlug, KNOWN_SLUGS, and the SettingsPanel switch. Hitting /admin/settings/appearance now redirects to /admin/appearance via a new legacyAppearance RawSlug variant.
  • src/admin/admin-root.tsx — case 'appearance' renders <AdminAppearancePage /> directly (it was a redirect to /admin/settings/appearance from v7.1.0 through v8.1.x). File-header docstring updated to describe the v8.2.0 reshuffle.

Trade-offs

  • Sidebar Appearance label is hardcoded English, matching the rest of DEFAULT_ADMIN_NAV (no other top-level sidebar label is i18n-routed today). The page heading inside <AdminAppearancePage> continues to drive off the existing admin.appearance.title i18n key, so localized admins still see a localized header on the page itself. A full sidebar i18n pass is a separate effort.
