Release list
2.6.1
Fixes
- Preserves Greek addition (
3 συν 5) and the letter nameεφin unstructured Word equation text. Explicitσυν(x)andεφ(x)function calls still translate correctly. - Normalizes equation-ending labels only in the final non-empty speech item across MathCAT, MathML and native Word fallback, preserving earlier section references and intervening pauses.
- Includes the equation routing, operator, configuration-crash, voice-diagnostic and fallback fixes from 2.5.7 through 2.6.0.
- Corrects version history, submission links and documentation for neural voices deferred since 2.5.6.
Verification
- 544 tests ran: 536 passed, 8 skipped for deferred neural features.
- Reproduced both new regressions before the fixes; regression tests pass afterward.
- Verified provider speech and reading-history recording with NVDA's actual AggregatedSection class extracted from source.
- MathCAT generated assets, Greek catalogue format checks, preview, package validation and ZIP integrity passed locally.
- Audited all 16 earlier release downloads: package manifest versions, SHA256 checksums and tracked packaged files match their tags. Existing tags and historical assets are preserved.
Compatibility and installation
Minimum NVDA: 2024.1.0. The declared last-tested NVDA version remains 2026.1.1. Manual Windows/NVDA listening and Word/PDF integration checks remain pending, including NVDA 2026.2 and 2026.3 beta.
Install greekMathReader-2.6.1.nvda-addon from the assets below, then restart NVDA and Word. The sha256.txt asset contains its checksum. This GitHub release does not submit an update to the NVDA Add-on Store.

2.6.0
Superseded by 2.6.1: fixes Greek addition/letter-name misreadings in fallback text and preserves non-final section labels.
What is fixed
- Normalizes final equation boundary announcements, including “section one”, “end of section”, and “τμήμα ένα”, to «Τέλος εξίσωσης» without rewriting embedded explanatory text.
- Translates Latin and Greek trigonometric function names in unstructured Word equation text, including
sin(x),ημ(x), and trigonometric expressions inside limits.
Compatibility
- Minimum NVDA: 2024.1.0
- Last manually tested NVDA: 2026.1.1
- NVDA 2026.2 and 2026.3 beta were not manually validated for this release; NVDA 2027.1 is not yet available.
Verification
- 539 tests ran: 531 passed, 8 skipped
- Release package validation passed
- MathCAT generated-asset check passed

2.5.9
Greek Math Reader 2.5.9 — equation speech crash fix
This release fixes a reproduced regression introduced in 2.5.0. The regression can stop equation speech in both Word and PDF, independently of the Word UI Automation setting.
Root cause
The last-reading feature converted NVDA's configuration section with dict(section). NVDA's AggregatedSection iterates keys but does not expose keys(). Python therefore treated the keys as key/value pairs and raised:
ValueError: dictionary update sequence element #0 has length ...; 2 is required
This happened after equation speech generation. The error handler repeated the same conversion and raised again, so the speech sequence never returned. NVDA can play its error sound for the logged exception. Versions 2.1 and 2.2 do not contain this last-reading code.
Fixes
- Uses
dict(section.items())for the last-reading record and unsaved Settings previews. - Ensures that optional history failures cannot interrupt normal equation speech or its error announcement.
- Uses an NVDA-style configuration object in provider and Settings tests, rather than an ordinary dictionary.
- Automatically sets Word UI Automation to Default (Where suitable), stored as exactly
0. - Repairs Word UIA at startup, after a configuration profile switch, and through Repair, Reset, or the Greek self-test.
- Clears cached UIA window decisions. Startup corrections persist. Profile switches use NVDA's normal persistence policy and do not force a save of unrelated temporary preferences.
The operator, silent-backend, and synthesizer compatibility fixes from 2.5.8 remain included.
Validation
- Reproduced the crash with NVDA's actual
AggregatedSectionclass before the fix. - Repeated the same reproduction after the fix: the provider returned
3 συν 5and recorded the reading without an exception. - Automated suite: 534 tests ran, 526 passed, 8 skipped.
- Local preview and package validation passed.
- Real Windows/NVDA audio and Word/PDF integration checks remain pending. The configuration-object reproduction does not replace those checks.
Install
- Download and install
greekMathReader-2.5.9.nvda-addonfrom the assets below. - Restart NVDA.
- Close and reopen Word or the PDF viewer.
You do not need to open NVDA's Advanced settings. Greek speech still requires a Greek-capable voice in the selected OneCore, eSpeak NG, or SAPI5 driver.
If the error sound continues, save the complete traceback from NVDA → Tools → View log. Copy the Greek Math Reader diagnostics before the self-test or Repair.
The sha256.txt asset contains the installer checksum. This GitHub release does not submit an update to the NVDA Add-on Store.

2.5.8
Greek Math Reader 2.5.8
Maintenance release for missing operators, mixed-language equation speech, and silent backend output.
Fixes
- Converts supported flat arithmetic, such as
3+5=8, to Greek words before NVDA processes punctuation. - Uses the same renderer for Word fallback speech and MathML fallback text.
- Retries empty backend output with the local engine. Empty local results and math objects without readable content produce an explanation instead of silent output.
- Preserves Word's UI Automation setting during installation, updates, Repair, and Reset.
- Restricts Greek MathCAT delegation to a provider with explicit Greek capability. Uses the local engine for unsupported preferences.
- Adds Greek voice detection for older NVDA versions and diagnostics for architecture, voice inventory, speech mode, volume, and output device.
Voice compatibility
The add-on uses NVDA's public speech API for eSpeak NG, Windows OneCore, and Microsoft SAPI5. One add-on package covers both NVDA architectures.
A Greek voice must be available to the selected synthesizer. OneCore and SAPI5 have separate voice inventories. NVDA 2026.1 and later provide separate SAPI5 64-bit and 32-bit routes. Install the voice for the selected driver. Before NVDA 2025.1, select the Greek SAPI5 voice directly.
Important for users of 2.5.7
If 2.5.7 changed Word behavior, select Default (Where suitable) for Word UI Automation in NVDA's Advanced settings. Restart NVDA and Word. Version 2.5.8 preserves the current choice because the previous setting is unknown.
Validation and limits
- Automated suite: 528 tests ran, 520 passed, 8 skipped.
- Package metadata and structure checks passed locally.
- Windows/NVDA audio checks and Word integration checks remain pending. Source compatibility and generated speech do not prove successful audio with every voice.
- The add-on cannot recover an equation that the application exposes only as an image or without readable mathematical content.
