TurboFan 1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@CloudCoderRnD CloudCoderRnD released this 25 Oct 14:23

What's new

  • TurboFan Pro is now open source, in this repository under GPL-3.0: battery charge limit, Mac health report with 90-day history and CSV export, and automatic updates. Build it yourself from source, or buy the official signed build from the CloudCoder Store to support the project.
  • Clearer throttling warning: it now says "heat or power", because macOS also slows the CPU when the charger is too small.
  • Fan curve: the temperature label no longer overlaps the sensor picker.
  • Messages from CloudCoder now come from turbo.cloud-coder.com, and "Get Pro" opens the CloudCoder Store.

From our first contributor

Thanks to Mossaddique Ahsan (@BeyondITL-Mossaddique) for seven improvements:

  • The background helper no longer stops if the app disconnects mid-request (#1)
  • The build robot only gets write access for releases (#2)
  • Documentation brought up to date (#3)
  • Fan safety test: exit code, one-fan Macs, and fans back to Auto on Ctrl-C (#4)
  • Message buttons and images must be https:// links (#5)
  • VoiceOver labels for the panel's controls (#6)
  • First unit tests for fan curves, presets and the power reader (#7)

Install or update

  2. In Terminal, in the unzipped folder, run ./scripts/install.sh. It replaces your current version and asks for your admin password once.

TurboFan 1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@CloudCoderRnD CloudCoderRnD released this 22 Oct 05:19

Everyone on 1.0.0 should update. This release fixes a bug where TurboFan's background helper could use a lot of CPU and memory.

Fixes

  • Helper CPU and memory: after the helper stopped sampling CPU power, it could get stuck reading in a loop, using high CPU and growing memory. Fixed.
  • Installer: it now waits for the old helper to stop before starting the new one. This fixes "Bootstrap failed: 5" on reinstall.

New

  • From CloudCoder: update notices and news appear as a card in the panel, and optionally as a macOS notification. The app checks every 6 hours and sends only the app version and edition. You can turn this off in the About window. See SECURITY.md.
  • Footer: shows cloud-coder.com and your edition.
  • About window: shows the edition, version and CloudCoder website.

Install or update

  1. Download TurboFan-1.0.1.zip below and unzip it.
  2. In Terminal, in the unzipped folder, run ./scripts/install.sh. It replaces 1.0.0 and asks for your admin password once.

Requires an Intel Mac with macOS 14 or later. Checksum: TurboFan-1.0.1.zip.sha256.

@CloudCoderRnD CloudCoderRnD released this 21 Oct 22:22

Please use TurboFan 1.0.1 instead. It fixes a bug in 1.0.0 where the background helper could use a lot of CPU and memory.

First public release of TurboFan: Turbo Boost and fan control for Intel Macs, in one menu bar app. Free and open source, by CloudCoder Limited.

What's in it

  • Turbo Boost on/off from the menu bar or turbofan on|off, with auto rules for battery, temperature and apps.
  • Fan control: Auto, Fixed, Linear and drag-to-edit Curve modes per fan, plus Quiet, Balanced, Cool and Full speed presets.
  • Profiles: Silent, Balanced, Performance and Max. They switch automatically when meeting apps run, when an external display is connected, or on battery or AC.
  • Readings: CPU clock and package power, every SMC temperature sensor, and a warning when macOS throttles the CPU.
  • Fan safety: fans go back to macOS control when TurboFan stops or the CPU reaches 100 °C, and after a crash.

Install

Download the latest release, unzip it and run ./scripts/install.sh. Requires an Intel Mac with macOS 14 or later.
