@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Oct 16:18

Set up a modded Morrowind without learning how OpenMW's config works.

Owl is a mod manager for OpenMW (https://openmw.org). Point it at the mods you've downloaded, put them in order, and press one button. Owl writes the OpenMW settings for you and shows you exactly what it will change before it does.

What's in 1.0

  • Understands FOMOD installers. Owl reads a mod's installer, asks its questions in plain language, and works out which folders and plugins your answers mean. It never copies or changes the mod's files. Installers that rename files or copy them into new subfolders can't be turned into OpenMW folders yet, and Owl tells you when that's the case.
  • Load order that explains itself. Owl checks that each mod's requirements are met and flags problems with a ⚠. One button offers to fix the order and shows you what it would move first.
  • Sources. Add a folder that holds many mods and Owl lists them all. Open any mod to read its author's notes and see what it needs.
  • Review before anything changes. The review screen shows the exact lines Owl will add to openmw.cfg. Nothing is written until you confirm.
  • Safe by design. Owl only edits its own marked section of openmw.cfg, keeps a .bak backup, and leaves the rest of your file alone.
  • Finds your settings, or lets you choose. Owl looks for openmw.cfg in the usual places. If yours is somewhere else, use Use a different file in the header to pick it.
  • Desktop app and command line. Most people want the app. The owl command-line tool is there for scripting.

Getting it

Download the file for your system from Assets below. The README has a step-by-step guide.

Known limits

  • Owl doesn't download mods yet. Download and extract them yourself first.
  • The Windows installer isn't code-signed, so SmartScreen warns on first run. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
  • Owl has been developed and tested on Linux. The Windows build has not been tried on a real Windows machine, including where Owl looks for openmw.cfg by default. If it can't find the file, pick it with Use a different file, and please open an issue if anything misbehaves.
