Release list
Lean 1.0.1
Changed
- Background tabs sleep after 5 minutes by default instead of 30; Settings › Tabs › Sleeping tabs still offers 15, 30 and 60
- Opening or restoring a window makes a page only for the tab in front, and every other tab loads when you first show it
- At most one inactive tab keeps a loaded page, so memory stays flat as tabs pile up
Fixed
- Tabs sleep on memory pressure even with automatic sleeping off, and caches are cleared when pressure is critical
- Reopening a closed window restores its session again
- Closed windows, split tabs and the loading bar no longer keep their pages and handlers alive
Lean 1.0.0
Lean is out of alpha. This release also includes everything below.
Added
- Force click a link to peek at it, as shift-click already could
- Settings › Appearance › Style: choose Liquid Glass or Solid
Changed
- A peek grows out of the link you pressed and shrinks back into it. Keeping it grows it to fill the page before it becomes a tab. It is just the page, over a blurred one, with close and expand beside it
- With tabs in the sidebar, the sidebar is part of the window and the page sits in a frame of your border thickness, in both styles. Liquid Glass makes the window frosted, darker in dark mode and tinted by your colour theme
- The auto-hidden sidebar slides in as the same surface, flush with the window's edges
- Liquid Glass is kept for buttons and menus; the sidebar, address bar and settings cards are frosted
- Settings lists its sections across the top instead of in a second sidebar
- Pinned tabs share the sidebar's width, and the selected tab is clearly highlighted in both styles
- Resizing the window and sliding the sidebar no longer redraw the whole window on every frame, and colour themes are cheaper to draw
- With the System interface theme, Lean and open pages follow macOS switching between light and dark
Fixed
- Reloading a page stuck loading (for example x.com after closing a tab mid-reload) now recovers without relaunching Lean
- With Liquid Glass on, the window behind the sidebar is see-through instead of solid
- Border thickness works with tabs on top in Liquid Glass
- Button hover highlights stay inside their glass capsule
- The close button on the selected tab is visible again
v0.1.16
Added
- Tab switcher order (Settings > Tabs): most recent (default), tab bar order, or least recent
Changed
- The tab switcher (⌃Tab) now lists tabs by most recent use instead of tab bar order, so one press flips between your last two tabs
v0.1.15
Added
- Follow the site's light or dark (Settings, off by default): the browser, the light or dark variant of your colour theme, and the recoloured page switch to match the page in front. It reads the page's own background, works on any site, and follows a site's own theme toggle within a fraction of a second
Changed
- The close button on icon-only tabs in the vertical sidebar is a badge on the tile's top-right corner
Fixed
- Back, forward and reload (stop, while loading) are back in the vertical sidebar's header
v0.1.14
Added
- Private windows: File > New Private Window (⇧⌘N), or the quick settings menu. A private window keeps cookies and site data in memory only, discards them when it closes, saves no history, tabs or passwords, and keeps extensions out
- Icon-only tabs in the vertical sidebar now appear as a grid of tiles, with a close button on hover
- A setting to peek at links that open in a new tab, off by default
Changed
- Links that open in a new tab now open a normal tab. They used to open in a peek panel whenever peek was on; that is now its own setting
- The vertical sidebar is part of the window frame and the page is a rounded card on it, in a darker shade of the theme; the floating sidebar is an opaque rounded panel
- Larger sidebar traffic-light buttons
Fixed
- The new-tab search box no longer overflows the window when it is small
- The History submenu in the sidebar's quick settings menu opens inside the window
- The sidebar address bar no longer takes focus and opens suggestions when the browser launches
- Thin, Normal and Thick border thickness all apply in the vertical sidebar layout
v0.1.13
Changed
- Background tabs fall asleep after 30 minutes by default, which cuts memory use with many tabs open (existing settings are kept)
- Tab updates redraw the interface at most once every 60ms, which lowers CPU use while pages load
Fixed
- A link that opens a new tab from inside a peek now turns the peek into a regular tab and opens the link as another regular tab, instead of leaving the peek open over a background tab
v0.1.12
Changed
- Pages load faster with the colour theme on: the theme engine batches its reads and writes, does less work while a page keeps changing, and backs off on heavy pages
Fixed
- The active tab highlight no longer stays on the previous tab after switching tabs quickly
v0.1.11
Added
- Peeks have a split-view button (⌘⌥⏎) that opens the peeked page beside the tab it came from
- Split-view highlights follow the colour theme's accent
Changed
- Peeks use a floating column of close, expand and split buttons beside the card instead of a header bar
- Tabs reserve room for the close button, so hovering no longer shifts their contents
Fixed
- Closing the native picture in picture window with its X leaves the video playing instead of pausing it
v0.1.10
Added
- Web pages take the colour theme through a new engine that maps each page's surfaces, text, borders, accents, dialogs and buttons to the theme, replacing Dark Reader; error pages use the same shade as the pages around them
- Native picture in picture: leaving a tab with a playing video or a call moves it to the macOS mini player (resize, mute, skip, back to tab), and the expand button takes you to the tab. Turn it off in Settings › General
- With peeking on, a click on a link that opens in a new tab opens as a peek over the page, like a shift-click
Changed
- Pages load and scroll with less theming overhead, and the page background is themed from the first frame instead of flashing the site's own colours
- Cards and dialogs on the system dark theme are darker, and borders are kept visible on every theme
Fixed
- Native picture in picture opens its window in the released app (the sandbox was blocking the system service), and opening a new tab or switching back to it while a video plays no longer leaves it blank
- Dialogs, pinned headers and light-on-dark buttons keep consistent colours when themed
v0.1.9
Added
- Extension popups open from the Extensions popover (uBlock Origin and the like), and extensions can now see your tabs and act on the current one
- Site card: click the tab you are on to see its connection, copy its address (⇧⌘C), print, zoom, and choose whether the site may play sound by itself
- Loading indicator styles in Settings › Tabs (Ring, Dot Matrix, Pulse, Bars, Orbit, Ripple); the choice applies everywhere, and Ring is the new default
- Tabs animate when switched, opened and closed: the highlight slides between tabs and the row closes up around a closed tab
Changed
- A single click on the current tab opens its address fully selected, without the icon or close button
- Inactive tabs are less white in the window-border style
Fixed
- Dragging a tab or selecting text in the address no longer moves the window, and three-finger window drag keeps working afterwards
