New: Camera Lock

One tap turns off every camera for every app, even one that's in a meeting right now. Only your fingerprint turns it back on.

  • Instant. Within about a second every app loses the camera. Apps that ask for one find no camera at all, not even a black picture.
  • Touch ID only. Unlocking asks for Touch ID with no "Use Password" option, so knowing your password isn't enough. Camera Lock turns on only while Touch ID is ready, so you can never lock a camera you can't unlock.
  • Every camera. Built-in, USB webcams and iPhone Continuity Camera (Desk View included), in every app: FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, Meet in any browser and the rest.
  • No camera permission. Tapdeck never opens a camera. It uses the same system setting as Apple's own camera restriction, through the helper Stay Awake already uses, so there's one approval for both.

After unlocking, quit and reopen any app that was using the camera (⌘Q, not just its window; for a browser, quit the whole browser). Those apps lost the camera when it was locked and don't look for it again by themselves. Tapdeck reminds you.

Add it from Control Center › Edit Controls › Tapdeck, or use Toggle Camera Lock in Spotlight, tapdeck camera lock|unlock|toggle in Terminal, or the camera row in the Chrome extension (tapdeck-chrome-extension.zip below).

Updating

Quit Tapdeck first (pkill -x Tapdeck; pkill -x TapdeckControls), then drag the new Tapdeck from Tapdeck.dmg into Applications and choose Replace. If Camera Lock doesn't show up in Edit Controls, see "After an update, a new tool is missing" on the website's Help section.

Requires macOS 26 Tahoe or later and, for Camera Lock, Touch ID. Universal: Apple silicon and Intel.
