🍽️ Material Designer 0.16.1 — Cha Chaan Teng Baked Pork Chop Rice · 茶記焗豬扒飯

This is the first build that actually contains the redesign. Both earlier releases (r7.1, r8.1) predated the Material Design 3 anatomy pass, the Cantonese locale, and every Phase 3 and Phase 4 surface. Everything below has been on main for a while and in nobody's hands until now.

Note

Known issue shipping in this build. The window title bar and the home hero still read "Open Design" — the upstream name. The rebrand was proved as installed identity (uninstaller, registry, process version) while the two strings a user actually reads were missed. Found by reviewing this build's own smoke capture, fixed in b4bf583, and it will be corrected in the next build — not this one.

🧾 Honest limitations

• Windows only. No macOS or Linux artifact, no updater feed.
• Nobody has audited the running interface at any display scale beyond the default, at a narrow width, or in a second language. One capture has been reviewed; that is all.
• The appearance editor and its infinite colour picker are written but unreachable — no surface mounts them yet. The spoken narrator was in the same state and has since been wired.
• No telemetry key is configured anywhere in this repository, so builds from here transmit nothing on that channel. The upstream analytics code paths are present and unmodified — that is a different statement from "telemetry was removed", and the difference is deliberate.

🍽️ Every release since the 25th shipped nameless, and nothing went red

Worth a full write-up, because the interesting part is not the bug — it is why nobody noticed for a whole day of releases.

🔍 What was happening

Every build carries a dim sum code name, and a dish is used exactly once — that is the whole job of a code name, so two builds are never called the same thing in conversation. The pool was 24 images bundled in this repository.

This project publishes a release per push. Twenty-four of those is a few hours, not a project's lifetime.

Note

The release step log said so plainly, every single time:

release-codename: 24 in catalog, 24 already spent
release-codename: every dish has been used; shipping without a code name

Running out was designed to be non-fatal — a release must never be blocked for want of decoration, which is correct. But non-fatal turned out to mean invisible: no red job, no warning annotation, just a quietly plainer release title, over and over.

The old documentation had even predicted it in writing — "With 24 dishes, the 25th release ships without a code name" — correctly, and nobody was watching release 25. A predicted failure with no alarm attached is just a failure with a paper trail.

✅ The fix

Names now resolve from the public catalogue at Ding-Ding-Projects/dim-sum-photos:

Two standards disagreed about photos — both now hold

• Every release must attach a real dim sum photo as a downloadable asset.
• A consumer repository must not copy public catalogue photos or add to its bundled set; it may link the public photo.

Rather than letting one quietly win, both are satisfied:

• 🏷️ The code name and its photo link come from the public catalogue.
• 📎 The attached asset is one of the twenty-four images already tracked here, rotated deterministically by how many dishes have been spent.

Nothing is fetched or vendored at publish time, and every release still carries a real photo you can download. The attached photo names its own dish, so it is never mistaken for the code name's.

Two smaller things the notes had been carrying went with it:

• 🔁 A doubled heading — ### Lines of code immediately followed by ### Line count, because the counter emits its own.
• 🖼️ The photo asset was keyed on the code name, so a build with no code name also silently lost its picture. It is keyed on the image now.
