Flicker has a new look to match embrly.ca, and it now works properly as a tray and menu bar app. Region capture works on any screen, you can sign in through your browser or to a self-hosted Emberly server, and dozens of bugs are fixed.
Highlights
- Sign in with your browser. Flicker shows a short code and opens your Emberly site; approve it there, including with two-factor. Flicker gets its own upload key named after your device, which you can revoke from your dashboard.
- Use your own Emberly server. The sign-in screen shows which server you're signing in to; click Change to use a self-hosted one. Flicker hides plans, perks and domains when your server doesn't offer them.
- Capture any region of any screen. Drag to select an area, or click once to capture the window under your cursor. Flicker no longer shows up in its own screenshots.
- Always one shortcut away. Press Ctrl+Alt+F (Control+Option+F on macOS) to bring Flicker back after closing it. Opening Flicker from the Start menu, Dock or a shortcut also brings back the copy that's already running.
- Choose what closing does: keep running in the tray (menu bar on macOS), minimize to the taskbar (Dock), or quit. Settings → Preferences → Window.
- A whole new look. The ember theme from embrly.ca, a new icon, and every page and setting redesigned.
- History and Stats from your account. History shows your latest 100 files from Emberly, including uploads from the website, ShareX or other devices. Stats shows your uploads over the last 14 days.
- Updates in place. Settings → About checks for new versions, and updates download and install without a reinstall.
- New sounds for captures, uploads and copied links, each of which you can turn off.
macOS
- Flicker has a Dock icon while its window is open and lives in the menu bar when it's closed. Captures from other apps never pop the window open.
- Settings shows Screen Recording, Accessibility and Login Items permissions, with buttons to grant them.
- First launch: Flicker isn't signed with an Apple Developer certificate yet, so macOS may say it "is damaged". After moving it to Applications, run
xattr -cr /Applications/Flicker.apponce in Terminal.
Fixes
- Closing the window left no way back except the tray icon.
- Shortcuts that another app (or Windows) already owned failed silently. Settings now says which ones are taken.
- "Save Local" did nothing and kept every capture forever. It's now Keep local copies, and captures are deleted after uploading when it's off.
- The Stats page failed to load, History had duplicate entries and missing previews, and profile details never refreshed.
- The Upload page sent files to embrly.ca even when you were signed in to another server.
- Short links pointed to the wrong address.
- Windows builds failed to compile.
