Hangover 1.0.15

Choose a tag to compare

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 23 Oct 17:19
  • The tray scrolls now. Every file stays in one row you swipe sideways. Prefer a +N count? Switch it in Settings, and the +N opens every file.
  • Hold longer to rearrange. Edit mode waits for a longer press, and a quick click never starts it by accident.
  • Sessions open their own window. Clicking a session on the island brings its own cmux terminal to the front.

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 18 Oct 19:24
  • Updates ask first. The island asks before it installs, and shows what's new after the restart.
  • To-dos from all your apps. Asana, monday and Canvas join the list.
  • Search in Settings. Command-F finds any setting.
  • Send feedback from the app. Write to me from Settings, About.
  • Longer recordings. Screen recordings no longer stop about a minute in.

Signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

Hangover 1.0.13

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 16 Oct 05:36

A screen recorder, a file converter, due dates on to-dos and notes that are real notes.

New

  • Record your screen. The Record widget records the whole screen, one window or an area you drag out. Add your face cam in a bubble, your voice and the Mac's sound if you want them. Standard keeps files small, and High records at full resolution and 60 fps. Control+Option+R starts and stops it from any app. Recordings are saved in Movies/Hangover and show up in the tray.
  • Convert files in the tray. Press Convert next to Files, then click a file to see what it can become. Pictures change format or size, videos get smaller, become a looping GIF or keep only their sound, and PDF pages become pictures. Command-click several pictures or PDFs to join them into one PDF.
  • Due dates on to-dos. Pick a day with the date button next to the add field. Notion keeps it in its Due column. The closed notch tells you at 9 AM on the day a task is due, and once when it is overdue.
  • Notes that are real notes. Write as many lines as you want, and they save as you type. Control+Option+J opens a new note from any app. Notes go to a folder you pick (an Obsidian vault works), to Apple Notes, or both.
  • Reference pictures in the design kit resize to any size and remember it. Double-click the empty part of the strip under a picture to match its shape again.
  • The tour shows the new widgets.

Fixed

  • Typing 1:30 in the timer means one minute and thirty seconds, and 1:02:30 works too.
  • A note that cannot be saved tells you in the editor and is kept for the next launch.
  • Many smaller fixes from a full review of the tray, the recorder, the to-dos and the notes.

Permissions

Recording asks macOS once for what it uses: Screen Recording, the camera for the face cam and the microphone for your voice. Saving notes to Apple Notes asks once to control Notes.

Install

You need macOS 14 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon. Hangover is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple.

  1. Download Hangover.zip below and unzip it.
  2. Move Hangover to your Applications folder and double-click it.
  3. macOS asks if you want to open an app downloaded from the internet. Click Open.

Already have Hangover? It updates itself. The new version goes in the next time you quit it.

Good to know

  • Coming from 1.0.10 or older? macOS asks for your permissions one last time, because the app's signature changed to Apple's in 1.0.11.
  • Don't run it next to Open Island. The two share the same hook paths.
  • A native speaker hasn't checked the Chinese text yet.
  • If something breaks, open an issue.

Hangover 1.0.12

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 13 Oct 04:15

The calendar's week look now fills its space.

Fixed

  • The week look of the calendar lists three events before it says "+N more". A day with three events showed one of them and "+2 more" above an empty strip. It now lists all three. A longer day shows two, with "+N more" under them. Thanks to the person who sent a picture of it.

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 13 Oct 03:55

Hangover is now notarized by Apple. It opens with a double-click.

Changed

  • No more "Open Anyway". Hangover is signed with an Apple Developer ID and checked by Apple. A fresh download opens like any other app.
  • This update asks for your permissions one more time, and that is the last. macOS ties what you allowed to the app's signature, and the signature changed from my own certificate to Apple's. If the volume keys say "Waiting for Accessibility access" with the switch already on, remove Hangover from that list with the minus button and add it again.

Install

You need macOS 14 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon.

Hangover 1.0.10

Choose a tag to compare

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 13 Oct 01:03

macOS stops forgetting your permissions, and Hangover is lighter on your Mac.

Fixed

  • macOS no longer forgets what you allowed. Until now every update made macOS ask again for the calendar, reminders and the camera, and left Accessibility switched on in System Settings while Hangover was told no. Every release was signed as a brand new app. From this version on Hangover is signed the same way every time, and macOS keeps what you allowed. This update asks one last time.
  • "Waiting for Accessibility access" now tells you what to do. If the volume keys are waiting while the switch is already on in System Settings, macOS is holding a permission from an older version. Settings says to remove Hangover from the list with the minus button and add it again, and the button there puts Hangover back in the list.
  • Notion and TickTick stop asking for your Mac password. Your token now lives in a private file only you can read, and Hangover no longer asks the Keychain when it starts. If you connected before this version, open Settings and press "Bring my saved token over" once. That is the last time macOS asks.
  • The scrub bar stays put when you pause. With Spotify it could jump back for a moment on pause and leap ahead on play.
  • A pause is no longer read as the next track. Spotify gives the same song a new ID every time you play or pause it, and Hangover took that for another song. In the welcome tour one press of Play or pause ticked Next track too.
  • Three lines of the welcome tour showed garbled text in Chinese. They read right again.
  • A swipe up closes the island even when a list you cannot see sits under the pointer.
  • A line you typed and did not save keeps the island open only on the page it is on.
  • The welcome tour keeps the swipe step ticked once you have done it.

New

  • Design kit. A new widget for design work: keep colors on palettes, pick any color on the screen with the eyedropper, copy it as hex, RGB or HSL, and keep links and reference pictures close. It is off until you turn it on in Settings, Nook.
  • Lights that follow the music. The glow can pulse with the beat and change color on it, as a glow or as lasers. Turn on "Pulse with the beat" in Settings, Personalization, Status glow. macOS asks once to let Hangover hear the Mac's sound. It keeps none of it.
  • Pick an accent color. Highlights are purple now: today in the calendar, the timer's button, the scrub bar, anything picked or switched on. In Settings, Personalization, choose one of eight colors or let Hangover follow the accent color your Mac is set to. Classic brings back the orange look it came with.
  • The welcome tour comes in three lengths. It asks how much time you have. The longer ones also show the design kit, the lights and fifteen more features, each with its own switch you can flip right there.
  • See the photo booth's layouts and themes before you pick one. In Settings, each layout and each theme is now a small picture of the strip it makes. Click one to choose it.
  • The small music card has the scrub bar too. Drag it to move through the song.

Better

  • The glow is far lighter on your Mac. While music played, the glow's slow drift kept the Mac's window system busy at about half a processor core. In my measurement on one Mac the fix brings that down to what the system uses at rest, and the glow looks the same.
  • Far less memory at launch. With agents on, Hangover used to read the whole last day of agent sessions in one go when it started, and held all of it until it was done. It now reads them a piece at a time.
  • It rests when nothing is happening. With agents on, Hangover used to wake every two seconds to look for the Codex app, and every minute to look at each running agent. It now waits until something changes: an agent starts, an agent ends, or Codex opens or quits.

Install

You need macOS 14 or later and a Mac with Apple silicon. The download page shows these steps with pictures.

  1. Download Hangover.zip below and unzip it.
  2. Move Hangover to your Applications folder and double-click it. macOS blocks it the first time, because I'm not in the Apple Developer Program and the app isn't notarized. Click Done.
  3. Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security and click Open Anyway.
  4. Confirm when macOS asks again.

Hangover 1.0.9

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 11 Oct 03:59

Two fixes from a tester's first day with it.

Fixed

  • macOS permission prompts no longer open underneath the island. In the welcome tour, "Allow access to Reminders" looked like it did nothing: the prompt was up, hidden under the island. The island now steps below a prompt while one is up. The same goes for the calendar, the camera and Notes.
  • Clicking a button no longer leaves the island stuck open. With On hover, a click inside used to keep the island open until you clicked outside it. It now closes when the pointer leaves, whatever you clicked. It stays while you are typing a note, a to-do or a timer length.

Changed

  • To keep the island open, pick On click in Settings, General. With On hover, a click inside no longer does that.

Hangover 1.0.8

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 10 Oct 22:53

The welcome tour now teaches the swipe and the calendar's looks, and the swipe got fixes.

New

  • The tour offers the swipe. Its "How should it open?" page has a switch for the two-finger swipe, and asks you to try it on the real island.
  • The tour shows the calendar's five looks. Pick one and the real island changes while you watch.

Fixed

  • A sideways swipe works with hover on. The island used to open under your fingers before the swipe landed.
  • A swipe up no longer scrolls the window behind the island.
  • A swipe while an agent waits for you does nothing. Before, it could hide the island once the wait ended.
  • The tour puts back what its buttons switched on: the mirror, the ring light, the photo booth and a timer.
  • The name on a photo strip is readable on every theme.

Hangover 1.0.7

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 10 Oct 11:03

Much lighter while music plays, and the swipe is now a choice.

Fixed

  • A GIF on the closed island no longer eats your battery. With a GIF showing while music played, Hangover used about 10% of a processor core, because every frame was decoded again on every loop. It now decodes the GIF once. On the same Mac, song and GIF it measured 0.2%.

Changed

  • Swiping is off until you turn it on. The two-finger swipe from 1.0.6 is now a switch in Settings, General: "Swipe on the island with two fingers". If you liked it, turn it on there.

Hangover 1.0.6

@EmmanuelH05 EmmanuelH05 released this 10 Oct 10:24

Swipe it away, and a tour that shows every widget working.

New

  • Swipe it away. Swipe up with two fingers on the island to close it. Swipe sideways on the closed island to hide what it shows, and again to bring it back. Something that needs you, like an agent waiting for an answer, always shows.
  • The tour shows every widget working. A new page walks each widget on your real island with buttons to try it: turn on the mirror and its ring light, take a photo booth strip, start a timer, play and skip music. Whatever a button turns on goes off again when you move on.
  • Photo booth strips carry the Hangover name, small, at the bottom of every strip.
