Converta now runs on Linux. Right-click a file → Converta → pick a format.

Which file do I download?

  • AppImage (any distro): make it executable and double-click it. That sets up the right-click menu, no root needed. Keep the file where it is.
  • .deb (Debian, Ubuntu, Mint) or .rpm (Fedora, RHEL, openSUSE): install it, then log out and back in, or run converta --install.
  • .tar.gz (any distro): unpack it and run ./install.sh, no root needed.

Run converta --uninstall before removing a .deb or .rpm, so the menu entries go too.

File managers

  • Submenu: Dolphin, Thunar, and Nautilus (GNOME Files) with the nautilus-python package (Debian/Ubuntu: python3-nautilus). Without it, Nautilus has Converta under Scripts.
  • Menu entries: Nemo, PCManFM. Scripts menu: Caja.
  • Any other file manager: "Open with" → Converta.

Good to know

  • Audio and video need the ffmpeg package. Office files need libreoffice.
  • Tested in containers on Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Kali, Fedora, Rocky, Alma, Arch, Manjaro, openSUSE, Void and Gentoo. The menu has so far been tried on a real desktop only on Fedora with GNOME.
  • ARM64 packages are built but have not been run yet.
  • Not supported: Alpine and other musl systems, NixOS, distros older than glibc 2.31.

Windows users: stay on 1.2.1, there is nothing new for you in this release.
