Special Topics: Workouts, Media and VideoSync Library

Workouts, Video and VideoSync Library contents determine what you see in Workouts, Media and VideoSync panes of Train View Sidebar. In this document we describe how to setup the library and some usage recommendations.

The Library is composed of 2 parts:

  • The collection of Workout, Media and VideoSync files
  • The TrainDB database referencing the files above

Workout and VideoSync files can be copied to the Workout and VideoSync Library folder or referenced from its original ubication, while Media files are always referenced from their original location due to disk space considerations. TrainDB maps Workout, Media and VideoSync names to their location in the filesystem.

Setting up your Workout, Media and VideoSync Library (WIP)

Workout and VideoSync Library folder location can be configured in options > Train > Preferences, which defaults to GoldenCheetah root, parallel to Athletes folders and TrainDB database file.

There are 6 methods to populate the Library:

  1. Create a new Workout using Workout Editor - This allows to create ERG mode workouts in graphical and textual modes, using the Save/Save As button a file is generated in the selected format and automatically imported to the library. See Workout Editor and main site tutorials for more details.
  2. Create a new Workout using Workout Wizard - This allows to create absolute/relative ERG mode workouts and slope mode workouts (gradient-distance) by segments and, in the last case, also from an existing activity (no lat/lon information is imported, only slope and distance). The generated file is automatically imported to the library too.
  3. Download Workouts from ErgDB - This allows to select between the hundreds of workouts available from ErgDB.org website, downloaded files files are automatically imported to the library.
  4. Download Workouts from Today's Plan - This allows to select from the workouts available for your Today's Plan user suscription, downloaded files files are automatically imported to the library.
  5. Import Workout, Video and VideoSync files - This allows to import files to the library, any combination of files of supported formats is allowed, Workout and VideoSync files, but not Video files, are copied to the Library folder provided they are not already there, and all of them are referenced in the Library database.
  6. Scan Workout, Video and VideoSync files - This allows to setup a list of folders to be scanned for Workout, Video and VideoSync files, initially this list includes the Library folder and you can add others; after save all matching files are referenced in the Library, but they are not copied to the Library folder like Import does.

Import vs Scan

All methods described above, except the last one, copy Workout and VideoSync files to the Workout and VideoSync Library folder when the original files is in a different folder, so you end up with 2 copies of each file in this case: the original which remains untouched, and the copy in the Workout and VideoSync Library folder which is actually used, eventually modified and deleted if you remove it from the library using Train SideBar.

Scan never copies Workouts and VideoSync files to the Workout and VideoSync Library folder, so beware they are always used, eventually modified and deleted from their original location. Additionally Scan rebuilds the TrainDB database, so it is an effective way to re-sync it when you add, move or delete files to the scanned folders without using the GoldenCheetah interfase.

Naming

GoldenCheetah Workouts, Media and VideoSync Library entries are ordered alphabetically in the Train SideBar lists, it is important to use a consistent naming scheme when you have a large number of them for grouping and faster navigation. Typing the first character is a faster way to navigate longer lists.

Simulation workouts needs all 3 kinds of files, usage is much simpler if you name corresponding files using the same basename, not only from a management point of view, but also because from v3.6 when you select the Workout, matching Video and VideoSync files will be selected automatically
