ESPFuji 1.0: network access for the Apple Lisa through an ESProFile.

The ESProFile (Alex Anderson-McLeod's ESP32 ProFile emulator) joins your Wi-Fi and fetches web pages for Lisa Office System programs through a "mailbox" file on the ProFile volume. No serial adapter. The ProFile emulation is unchanged. Not the official ESProFile firmware, and not the official ESProFile repository (it is Tim O'Connor's fork). Alex has approved of this being published, but he does not support the ESPFuji firmware in any way: the mailbox code, the Lisa tools and the flasher are Tim O'Connor's, and questions or bugs about them go to this repository's Issues, never to Alex. The ESProFile boards and the stock emulator firmware remain Alex's work and his to support.

What runs on the Lisa. The ESPFuji test tool on the release floppy is the diagnostic: H asks the drive hello (firmware, uptime, Wi-Fi, address, memory), W the Wi-Fi state, G fetches one page and shows its raw text, S the counters; run it once to create the mailbox file and to see the drive answer. The applications are LisaFuji 1.2 (news, Wikipedia, the space station and crew, the weather, the Lisa's clock from the network) and LisaCheckers 1.2 (checkers against people on other machines); both find the ESPFuji drive by themselves at launch and work the same way through an RS-232 FujiNet or a LisaNet.

You need updated Lisa programs. Only the 30 October 2026 releases know the ESProFile route: LisaFuji 1.2, LisaCheckers 1.2, LisaSalvo 1.2, LisaTwinClock 1.3 and the LisaFuji Browser 1.2 beta (all at https://github.com/GyroPilot); the earlier releases (LisaFuji 1.1, the 1.2 beta of 23 October, LisaCheckers 1.1) only talk to a serial FujiNet. Get them from https://github.com/GyroPilot/Apple-LisaFuji/releases and https://github.com/GyroPilot/Apple-LisaCheckers/releases, and put each tool on the ESProFile's own volume, in the same window as the ESPFuji test tool.

What works: HELLO / WIFI / STATUS / CLOCK / OPEN / READ / CLOSE / TRACE requests; HTTP and HTTPS pages up to 32 KB; every fetch answered within 30 s; the clock from SNTP, in your local time when timezone= is set in espfuji.ini; Wi-Fi kept awake, an idle keepalive, a rejoin when the address is lost; a page read to its full length; a request typed on the USB port never takes a Lisa's reply.

Proven: on a Lisa 2/10 with LOS 3.1: LisaFuji 1.2 (news, Wikipedia, the space station, weather) and the clock set through the drive; a complete LisaCheckers 1.1 game against the gateway (34 moves) through the drive; a full day's idle soak on a second board (fetch every 15 minutes, 0 cut, 0 lost) after an earlier 8-hour soak and a 1,500-fetch overnight run. Flashed from Windows 10 (Python 3.12, esptool 5) and macOS 15 (Apple's Python 3.9, esptool 4) with the flasher below.

1.0 is the 0.5.3 code with the version changed: nothing else moved between the last test and this release.

Files

  • ESPFuji_1.0_esp32.merged.bin: the plain ESP32 module (ESP32 Dev Module, the one in the ESProFile boards). Whole flash; write at address 0.
  • ESPFuji_1.0_esp32s3.merged.bin: the ESP32-S3 module. Compiles and is included; not yet tried on hardware.
  • flash_espfuji_release.py: backup (always first), flash, restore, with esptool 4 or 5 from any OS (macOS: use a venv, python3; the script header has the two lines). The backup puts Alex's firmware back any time.
  • espfuji.ini.example: your network name and password, and optionally your time zone, on the SD card root as espfuji.ini.
  • ESPFUJI_0_2_REVD.dc42: the Lisa test tool floppy (H, W, G, S; the tool is "ESPFuji 0.2"). It creates MAILBOX.DATA on the ESProFile's volume.
  • SHA256SUMS.txt

Install steps and everything else: the README in espfuji/.

Known limits: one page open at a time; HTTPS without certificate checks (like the FujiNet); no POST; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; the Lisa reads a page in 492-byte pieces.

Problems: ESPFuji questions and bugs go to this repository's Issues page. The ESProFile boards and the stock emulator are Alex's: https://github.com/alexthecat123/ESProFile.
