Dualion 0.1.5 – now on Linux 🐧

Dualion now runs on Linux too, next to Windows and macOS.

Linux

• Packages: .deb for Debian, Ubuntu and Mint, an AppImage for any distribution, and a PKGBUILD for Arch Linux.
• Drives: mounted drives appear in the drive bar with their labels. System, removable, network and optical drives are told apart.
• File icons: taken from your icon theme (GNOME, KDE and others).
• Opens your terminal: GNOME Terminal, Konsole, kitty, Alacritty… and the file manager's properties window.
• Disk images: ISO and IMG files are mounted through udisks.
• Network place: computers come from Avahi, shared folders from smbclient, and shares connect through GVFS.
• All the rest works as on the other systems: remote file systems, archives, previews, search and the operation queue.
• Not available on Linux yet: dragging files out of the window, and MTP devices (Android works over ADB).

Installing on Linux

• Debian / Ubuntu / Mint: sudo apt install ./Dualion_0.1.5_amd64.deb
• Arch Linux: put PKGBUILD into an empty folder and run makepkg -si.
• Any distribution: chmod +x Dualion_0.1.5_amd64.AppImage and run it. It needs FUSE 2; on Arch, sudo pacman -S fuse2.

These optional tools switch on more features:

• udisks2: disk images;
• gvfs-smb / gvfs-backends, smbclient, avahi-utils: network shares;
• adb, docker, rclone.

Small conveniences and fixes from your feedback.

New

• Open several files at once: with more files marked, Enter or a double click asks once and then opens them all in their apps.

• Go to the path in the clipboard: Ctrl/⌘+Shift+G opens the folder, or selects the file, whose path you copied. Quoted paths and file:// links work too.

• Optional unmarking (Settings › Panels):

  • clear marks when switching tabs;
  • clear marks after dragging files.

  Both are off by default, so marks now stay after a drag.

Improved

• Tabs refresh when you switch to them, so a tab that was hidden shows the folder as it is now.
• Tab bars show or hide on both panels together, so the file lists stay aligned.
• Windows: files open exactly like in Explorer, with the association's default action. For example, .tif files associated with Photoshop now open.
• macOS: better access to iCloud Drive and other cloud storage (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox in ~/Library/CloudStorage).

A small maintenance release with safer file operations.

Improved

• Copying or moving onto the same file: Dualion now recognizes when the target is the same file as the source under a different path, such as a symlinked folder, /Volumes/Macintosh HD/…, a hard link or a mapped drive, and leaves it untouched instead of overwriting it.
• Multi-rename: name swaps where one of the new names is invalid are refused, so no file gets replaced.
• Renaming on remote file systems (S3, rclone, Docker, FTP) now checks for an existing file with the same name first.
• Deleting links on remote file systems from Windows works correctly.

A big one: remote file systems, a TC-style Network place, Explorer's context menu on Windows and a pile of fixes.

New

Remote file systems. Every one opens in a panel like a folder. Copying works between any two places (also remote → remote), as do moving, renaming, deleting, queues, checksum verification, previews and opening files.

• SFTP (SSH):
  • sign-in with a key file (with passphrase), the SSH agent / Pageant, ~/.ssh keys or a password;
  • server keys are checked against known_hosts: unknown keys show their fingerprint, changed keys are refused.
• WebDAV / WebDAVS: Nextcloud, ownCloud, Synology, SharePoint… You can enter a full URL.
• S3 and compatible storage: AWS, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, MinIO. Buckets appear at the root and big files are uploaded in parts.
• Found automatically in the Network menu:
  • Android devices over ADB;
  • phones and cameras over MTP (Windows);
  • Docker / Podman containers;
  • rclone remotes (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Mega, pCloud… 70+ services).

Network place (like TC's Network Neighborhood):

• computers on the LAN → their shared folders → connect;
• opens instantly with known computers, connected servers and Windows network shortcuts, while discovery runs in the background;
• Windows asks for credentials with the system dialog, macOS connects SMB shares with Finder's dialogs.

Context menu:

• Windows: right-clicking files shows Explorer's own menu, with shell extensions, Send to, Open with, 7-Zip, OneDrive and so on. Dualion's commands are in a submenu.
• macOS: a Finder-style menu with Open With listing the apps that can open the file.

Tabs:

• tabs can be dragged to reorder them; locked and unlocked tabs each stay within their own group;
• lock a tab to a folder: browse anywhere inside it, and switching back to the tab returns to that folder.

Other:

• Space marks the item and moves to the next one; hold it to mark a run.
• CorelDRAW previews show every page of multi-page documents.

Fixed

• Opening folders:
  • a quick double click into the next folder no longer needs a mouse move first;
  • Enter or a double click no longer "does nothing" when the folder changes on disk at the same moment.
• Pressing Backspace several times quickly goes up each time.
• Dragging files out of Dualion no longer crashes the app on some systems, such as over Remote Desktop or with network drives.
• Windows icon is now full size, like other apps.
• Network menu: no more double separators.

ADB, Docker and rclone are used when installed; Dualion finds them even outside PATH.

Bug fixes and a few things requested right after the first release.

Fixed

• Moving files between drives (e.g. C: → D:) failed with "Cannot move across drives". Such moves now copy and then delete the source, including when merging into existing folders.
• The buttons in the error dialog were squeezed and cut off on Windows.
• F2 in the Copy/Move dialog now adds the job to a queue, as in Total Commander.
• F3 in the viewer no longer reopens the same file on macOS. F3 / Shift+F3 now jump to the next / previous match, and Esc closes the viewer.
• Typing to search in a pane now accepts spaces ("meeting notes") instead of marking the file.

New

• Drag files out of Dualion into Finder, Explorer or any other app.
• CorelDRAW previews (.cdr) for thumbnails, Quick View and F3. Both old (5–X3) and new (X4+) files are supported, without CorelDRAW.
• Date & time format in Settings → Appearance. Choose "by language", a preset such as 21.10.2026 18:48 or 2026-10-21 18:48, or your own pattern.
• Separate column widths for the left and right pane. You can switch back to shared widths in Settings → Panels.
• Tabs:
  • you can rename a tab by double-clicking it or right-clicking → Rename Tab;
  • locked tabs can now be browsed normally; they stay on the left and cannot be closed.

Dualion 0.1.0 – first public release 🎉

I was fed up with every file commander out there, so I built my own, vibecoded with Claude Opus 5.5. Dualion is a fast, native-looking dual-pane file manager for macOS and Windows, in the spirit of Total Commander.

Highlights

• Panes: two panes with tabs, a drive bar, TC-style marking and keyboard-first control.
• Instant search (⌘P / Ctrl+P) over a live file index, Everything-style, with a query language (type:video res>=4k duration>10m) and smart folders.
• Universal undo: copy, move, delete, pack, extract and rename can all be undone. A dry run before every copy shows what will happen.
• Operation queues with pause and resume. APFS cloning makes copies on macOS instant.
• Previews:
  • syntax highlighting in 40 languages;
  • Excel, Word and PowerPoint, including the old formats;
  • PSD, Affinity and RAW without the original apps;
  • fonts, PDF, video and audio.
• Archives: ZIP, 7z, RAR, ISO and TAR* open like folders, password-protected archives included. You can pack ZIP or 7z with AES-256.
• Metadata columns: camera, ISO, duration, codec, artist, pages… They are picked automatically from the folder's content.
• Tools:
  • disk usage treemap;
  • duplicate finder, including similar photos;
  • Hazel-like folder rules;
  • command palette.
• Local AI search via Ollama, which is optional: ?videos larger than 1 GB from last year. Nothing leaves your computer.
• FTP/FTPS with an encrypted password vault.
• Cloud folders: OneDrive, iCloud and Dropbox online-only files are never downloaded behind your back.
• Languages: English and Czech.
