Holder 0.2.5 - Jules

Image of a character having a revelation about stopping crime and becoming a hero

The suits are off. The Python API grows.
We’ve left behind our scattered repos.
Lost little cards, once doomed to roam,
Now find a path that leads them home.

What changed?

Cards and organising

  • Move a card to the top level from anywhere, in one step.
  • Moving a card between cards that sit very close together now lands exactly where you asked.
  • Trashing a card keeps its children: they move up a level to take its place. Or, if you prefer, trash the card with everything inside it. The trash dialog explains both choices.
  • Restoring from Trash is predictable: one card at a time, back to its parent if that is still there.
  • Cards hidden under a missing or trashed parent are found and made reachable again, at startup and after every sync.

Sync

  • Fixed: a card trashed or edited on one device could break, or silently fail to update, the next sync on another device.
  • Each sync now tidies up anything odd it brings in, such as a parent card deleted by hand or by an older version of Holder.

The desktop app

  • The desktop app now starts and looks after its own backend on every platform. The separate launcher is gone, and so is the Linux wrapper script.
  • Windows: the shortcuts start Holder directly, and holderctl is on your PATH.
  • macOS: the app finds its bundled tools and resources reliably.

For people who script Holder

  • holderctl can move cards to the top level (move --top-level), trash a card with everything inside it (trash --subtree) and repair hidden cards (repair). It is the reference client for everything the backend can do.
  • The backend can stop by itself when nothing is using it, and holderctl ensure starts it when needed.
  • Clients can follow changes live as they happen, and card listings page efficiently with filters by parent and tag.
  • Holder Kit, the Python library that embeds Holder's engine and works offline with no backend, is on PyPI: pip install holder-kit. It is also packaged for Ubuntu as python3-holder-kit.
  • A new Python library for controlling a running Holder (projects, cards, tags, search and live changes) is in the repository at python/holder/.

For developers

  • Everything now lives in one repository, HolderTeam/holder: core, the backend, holderctl, the desktop app, the Python libraries and this website. Every part has one version, starting with this one.
  • The core library's SDKs for Linux, macOS and Windows are attached to this release, built from exactly the core the backend and desktop ship with.

Ubuntu

New packages were uploaded to the Holder PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:holderteam/holder
sudo apt install holder

If you already have it, Ubuntu should update it in its normal update manager. To be impatient and force it:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install holder

See the Ubuntu notes for more details.

Linux

Download the AppImage.

Double click on it, or run it like a script:

./Holder-0.2.5-x86_64.AppImage

See the Linux notes for more details.

macOS

Download the DMG file.

See the macOS notes for more details.

Windows

Download the EXE installer.

Holder is signed by our open-source GitHub workflows, but Windows doesn’t trust our certificate. Both belong to Microsoft; apparently they haven’t been introduced.

Windows may object to downloading, keeping and installing Holder. Expect some resistance before you reach the diner. Good luck!

Optional step: The public signing certificate (.cer) is included below. Installing it may make Windows slightly less cross, and you can use it to verify that the EXE was signed by us. We haven’t got around to paying for a Windows-approved certificate. They want our glowing briefcase and our pocket watch, but they can’t have it.

Python

pip install holder-kit

Holder 0.2.1

@github-actions github-actions released this 30 Sep 15:56

Holder 0.2.1 - The Keymaster

keymaster

Four days gone, we're back once more.
The Keymaster has found the door.
GitHub trusted, Windows speaks,
Mac now shows the signs we seek.
A smaller quest, the bugs are slain.
Ship the thing: then ship again!

What changed?

  • Holder now verifies GitHub's identity when you first connect a project over SSH, so Git sync can start without manually adding GitHub to your computer's trusted hosts.
  • Github CLI now supported and working on Windows.
  • On macOS, the editor button and the check mark showing that Git sync is configured now display their icons.

Ubuntu

New packages were uploaded to the Holder PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:holderteam/holder
sudo apt install holder

If you already have it, Ubuntu should update it itself in its normal update manager. To be impatient and force it, use:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install holder

See the Ubuntu notes for more details.

Linux:

Download the App Image.

Double click on it, or run it like a script:

./Holder-0.2.1-x86_64.AppImage

See the Linux notes for more details.

macOS

Download the DMG file.

See the macOS notes for more details.

Windows

Download the EXE installer.

It is signed by GitHub workflows in an open source way, not corporate signed using cold-hard cash, so not recognised by Windows, even though ironically Windows and GitHub are both owned by Microsoft... the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.

So as always, Windows is going to fight tooth and nail against you downloading it, keeping it and installing it. It only hurts once. Good luck!

Optional step: The public signing certificate (.cer) is included below. Installing it may make Windows slightly less cross, and you can use it to verify that the EXE was signed by us. We haven't got around to paying the gatekeeper to get a Windows approved certificate. After all, if the keymaster finds the gatekeeper, it is bad, very bad.

Optional step: If you want freedom from this nonsense, maybe consider Linux?

Holder 0.2.0

@zeth zeth released this 27 Sep 13:45

Holder 0.2.0 - Hodor

020-release-art

Markdown flavoured, links now flow.
Tags remember where things go.
Milestones mark the road ahead,
Calendar knows what's done and said.
No clever thoughts, no AI lore,
Just stronger bones than those before.
Less likely now to crash or fall,
A sturdier app standing tall.
Holder is here. He's big. He's steady.
Not very clever, not yet ready.
Enough new tricks. No feature more.
Ship 0.2.0 out the door!

Holder

This is an early pre-1.0 release. Expect rough edges.

Changes in this release

Markdown editor improvements:

  • Font selector, so now you don't have to squint if you are not me on my computer, pretty important!
  • Trailing whitespace handling and settings to configure it.
  • Support for GFM - Github Flavoured Markdown:
    • CommonMark headings, strikethrough, task markers, table delimiters, alerts, bare URLs and wikilinks. #todo now styled as a tag not a heading.
    • Smart Enter handling for bullets, numbered lists and tasks. Empty items end the list; completed tasks continue as unchecked tasks.
    • Extended Ctrl-click/Ctrl-Enter navigation to Markdown links, autolinks, email addresses, bare URLs and images.
    • Added keyboard shortcuts for all the markdown features.

New Tools and Tool improvements:

  • Tag tool;
  • Calendar and Milestones Tool;
  • History tool;
  • Image preview (and experimental inline image viewing);
  • Improved Sync tool shows status after correct git setup.
  • Windows now has a terminal tool too.
  • holderctrl supports all the new tools too.
  • Holderctl can refer to cards three ways now. Full UUID → unique prefix → exact title precedence

Other fixes:

  • Migrated to Adaptive Dialogs to keep up with changes in upstream GTK.
  • Improved crash recovery
  • New ping endpoint for unauthenticated "are we up" check.

Platform support:

  • AppImage for any Linux
  • C API
  • Core logic split into holder-core

Holder 0.1.7 - The Black Knight

Holder_Black_Knight

Every trouble was descoped.
Not quite all that we had hoped.
Windows: no signing, no terminal.
And the fonts... suboptimal.
We hack and we patch.
'Tis but a scratch.
Swords down! Let the hacking cease.
Ship the thing: our first release!
