v6.2.4 — User-defined password, seed phrase recovery, and Moss Groups

This release overhauls Node Manager authentication and updates how operators join always-on hApp groups on EdgeNode. Setup no longer auto-generates a one-time password on startup; operators choose their own password and receive a 12-word BIP39 recovery seed phrase. The management panel also replaces the old hApp manifest hosting UI with Moss Groups, including invite-link join.

Highlights

Authentication & recovery

  • User-defined password during onboarding — operators set a password (minimum 8 characters) as part of first-time setup
  • 12-word BIP39 recovery seed phrase — generated at onboarding, shown once in the UI, and stored on disk only as a hash (seed_hash in state)
  • Password recovery — “Forgot Password?” on the login page lets operators reset their password using their seed phrase
  • Legacy node migration — upgraded nodes without a seed phrase see an Upgrade Security banner on /manage to generate one while logged in

Moss Groups

  • Join via invite link — paste a Moss Group Invite Link from your group administrator directly in /manage
  • Optional join metadata — Node Profile Name and Node Description fields when joining a group
  • Moss dashboard — Start Node, View Groups, View Node Info, and View Installed Apps from the management panel
  • Replaces hApp manifest hosting — the previous Hosted hApps UI (manifest paste, validate, deploy) has been removed in favor of Moss group management

Infrastructure

  • Port 80 — the management UI now binds to 0.0.0.0:80 instead of 8080 (aligns with http://holo.local in holo-node-iso)

New & changed API endpoints

Method Path Auth Description
POST /manage/auth/recover Public Reset password using seed_phrase + new_password
POST /manage/auth/generate_seed Session One-time seed generation for legacy nodes
POST /manage/moss/join Session Join a Moss group via invite link
POST /manage/moss/start Session Start the EdgeNode Moss node
GET /manage/moss/list Session List Moss groups
GET /manage/moss/info Session Moss node info
GET /manage/moss/apps Session List installed Moss apps

Changed: GET /manage/status now includes has_seed_phrase: boolean.

Removed: /manage/happs/* routes (validate, deploy, enable, disable, uninstall, logs).

Onboarding changes

  • New Create password field in the setup wizard
  • On successful initialization, the UI displays the 12-word seed phrase with a prominent warning
  • Operators must click “I have saved my seed phrase” before continuing to the dashboard

Upgrade notes for existing nodes

  • No ISO reinstall required — running nodes pick this up via the normal self-update mechanism (within ~60 minutes, or immediately via Check for Updates Now in /manage)
  • Your existing password still works after upgrade
  • Seed recovery is not available until you generate a seed phrase — log in to /manage and use the Upgrade Security: Generate Recovery Seed Phrase banner
  • Update bookmarks/URLs — use http://holo.local or http://<node-ip> (port 80), not :8080
  • The auto-generated setup password is no longer printed to the console or HDMI screen on startup
  • hApp manifest hosting is no longer available — use Moss group invite links to join always-on groups instead

Technical changes

  • Added bip39 crate for seed phrase generation and validation
  • Removed startup auto-password generation (no more random password on first boot)
  • Password hash remains at /etc/node-manager/auth; seed hash stored in /etc/node-manager/state as seed_hash
  • Moss group operations run via wdocker inside the EdgeNode container

Assets

  • node-manager-x86_64
  • node-manager-aarch64
